THE 2014 K-Swiss ITU Subic International Triathlon, slated April 26 and 27 at Subic Bay Freeport, is set to be the biggest edition ever as it enters its third decade.
Secretary general Mon Marchan of the organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines said stakes will be higher as the event serves as a 5-in-1 affair, laced by its lofty status as one of the legs of the Asia Cup series.
Marchan is joined by in the local organizing committee by Sarita Zafra, Ting Joson, and Anton Tangan.
As an Asia Cup series leg, SUBIT stakes ITU points for local and international elite athletes, who are bidding to improve their World and Asian rankings. Adding to the international flavor of the SUBIT is the second Asian Paratriathlon Championships, whose inaugural event was held in conjunction with SUBIT.
The SUBIT, sponsored by Century Tuna, Asian Center for Insulation Phil., Gatorade, SPEEDO, Standard Insurance, David’s Salon, SBMA and Green Triathlon, will also serve as a National Age-Group Championships, Inter-Club Competition and National Triathlon Tryouts.
The winners of the male and female age-group categories will receive from TRAP an all-expenses-paid participation in one of the tourneys of the Asia Cup series this year as incentive.
The Inter-club competition within the SUBIT event will stake the National Triathlon Club Championship trophy to the winning squad.
SUBIT will also serve as a tryout event for berths in the national pool and the national team that will compete in various international triathlon events, including the Incheon Asian Games and the Asian Beach Games in Phuket. (Randy Caluag, Manila Bulletin)
