National Duathlon meet slated Nov. 12 in Subic

THE stage is set for the National Duathlon Championships 2017 on Nov. 12 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, the first event in the long selection process that will determine the members of the national team.

Organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines in partnership with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, the race will have a standard distance course of 10K run, 40K biking and 5K run for the elite and age group participants.

The sprint distance course of 5K run, 20K bike and 2.5K run is for participants aged 16 to 19 and 20-and older.

Remy Field in Subic will serve as the main venue while the bike legs will cover stretches of Rizal Ave., Argonaut Highway and the National Container Terminal road.

At stake in the event sponsored by SBMA Tourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission, Standard Insurance, Gatorade and Asian Center for Insulation are medals as well as gift packs for the Top three male and female age-group winners and Top three male and female winners for Sprint 16-19 and 20-above categories.

Aquathlon championships set in Subic

The Triathlon Association of the Philippines will stage two races for the derivatives of triathlon in September a week apart in separate traditional venues.

The Philippine Aquathlon Championships 2016, held in cooperation with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, unwraps at Camayan Beach Resort and Ocean Adventure in Subic Freeport on Sept. 11.

Kick-off event of the Philippine Youth Olympic Games Qualifying Series for those born in 2001-02, the aquathlon is also the national championships for junior high school and collegiate levels, youth and junior not representing any school, para athletes and open category.

The race course of the standard aquathlon is 2.5K run-1K swim-2.5K run; sprint is 1K run-600m swim-1K run.

Philippine Sports Commission and SBMA Tourism Department co-present the aquathlon tilt with Camayan Hotel, Subic Holiday Villas and The Lighthouse Marina Resort as partner hotels.

Veteran internationalists Mirasol Abad, Miscele Gilbuena, Bigboy Estevez and John Chicano, the country’s top duathletes banner the tough field in the PSC-supported duathlon which aims to support efforts to clean and re-develop the Iloilo River, according to Iloilo City Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa.

Elite and age group duathletes cover the 8.5K run- 40K bike-6K run course with the latter not allowed draft in the bike leg.

The sprint distance in duathlon is 1.6K run, 20K bike and 2.6K run. Run 1.6k, Bike: 20K, Run2:6k.

Deadline for registration in the run-swim-run event is Sept. 7. Entry fee is P 1,500 for youth, P2,000 for junior, P2,000 for individual age groupers and P3,000 for the two-man relay.

National triathlon set in Subic

A showcase of new talents of the Philippine triathlon and duathlon team will serve as the highlight of the opening leg of the 2014 National Age-Group Triathlon (NAGT) series which will start at sunrise on Jan. 19 at the Dungaree Beach, Subic Bay Freeport.

The new PHI team members composed of Jared Macalalad, Claire Adorna, Nestor Cagas, Vicky Deldeo, Justin Chiongbian, Baltazar Valencia and Nancy Papaya will compete against tough competitors in the special elite category which will determine their rankings as well as their preparations for this year’s Asian Games, Asian Beach Games and the Youth Olympic Games.

Also competing are national standouts like Nikko Huelgas, Jon Chicano, Km Mangrobang, Kevin Eijansantos, Robeno Javier, Pawee Fornea, Mirasol Abad and Magali Echauz.

The elites along with seasoned age-groupers will endure the Standard Distance 1.5 kilometer swim – 40 Km bike – 10 Km run course which will take them from Dungaree to Argonaut Highway (until Corregidor) and to Naval Mag in the freeport.

The event is sponsored by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Tourism Department, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Inc. (ACIP), Gatorade, Standard Insurance, Green Triathlon, Lifestyle Subic Bay and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The age-groupers (20 and above) and the 16-19 participants will handle the Sprint Distance course (750 meter swim – 20 Km bike – 5 Km run) while teen participants aged 13 to 16-years-old will engage in the mini-sprint course of 350 M swim – 16 Km bike – 2.5 Km run). Lastly, a SuperTriKids aquathlon side-event
will be held for participants aged 9-10 years (200 M swim – 400 M run) and 11-12 years (350 M swim – 1.5 Km run).

At around 8:30 a.m., participants will be allowed to take their post-race meal followed by the event’s awarding ceremony at about 10 a.m. Medals and gift items will be award to the Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female winners of the different categories covering all distances. Meanwhile, race participants will be entitled to finishers’ medals and t-shirts.

Registration is ongoing until Jan. 12 with entry fees set at P3,500 for standard distance events, P3,000 for sprint distance, P2,500 for mini-sprint and P1,000 for STK aquathlon races. Javier, Abad rule national duathlon

MANILA - Robeno Javier reclaimed his billing as the country’s top male duathlete while Mirasol Abad extended her reign to four years on the distaff side as they ruled the 2013 Philippine National Duathlon Championships at the Remy Field, Subic Bay Freeport.

Javier kept pace with national triathlete John Chicano in the 10K run and 40K bike before pushing himself hard in the 5K run to submit the fastest time of one hour, 54 minutes, 48 seconds.

The event, which drew over 200 duathletes, was sponsored by the Subic Bay Mertropolitan Authority (SBMA) Tourism Department, Standard Insurance, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Inc, Gatorade, David’s Salon, Fitness First, Lifestyle Subic Bay and Green Triathlon.

Former Asian duathlon champion and last year’s top ADC Filipino finisher Ryan Mendoza rallied from third place after the first run to eventually finish second in 1:55:22 while a cramping Chicano settled for the bronze medal (1:55:57).

Abad was simply awesome in her field as she led by a mile after the 10K run to anchor her 2:21:49 time. The only problem she encountered was when she missed the turnaround point in the bike but that hardly made a dent on her performance as Mary Pauline Fornea was still more than three minutes off the winning time (2:23:56). Third place went to Rowena Valdez (2:36:51).

Jeric Buhain and Cebuanos Justin Chiongbian and Shaia Ruth Uy dominated the junior sprint and mini sprint categories in the race organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines in cooperation with the SBMA tourism department.
 
The 16-year old Buhain, meanwhile, erased bitter memories of last year’s ADC at the same venue as he clocked an impressive 1:02:26.08 in the 5K run, 20K bike and 2.5K distance.

“I was leading (last year) when I had an infraction with my helmet in the bike transition. So my goal really is to win here,” said Buhain, a developmental pool member, who defeated Edward Jared Macalalad (1:03:30) and Jarwyn Banatao (1:05:40).

Chiongbian retained his title in the boy’s mini sprint (40:16.06) while Uy, 14, won her first duathlon race in 46:13.83. The good performance of the young duathletes boosted TRAP’s plan to put more young athletes in the pool next year.

“We will review the performances of our national athletes because we plan to revamp the squad next year with emphasis on youth and discipline,” said TRAP head Tom Carrasco Jr.

Subic Bay hosts PH duathlon on Dec. 1

PHILIPPINE Team berths are at stake in the Philippine National Duathlon Championships 2013, firing off at 6 a.m. on Dec. 1 at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Philippine Olympic Committee chair Tom Carrasco, the president of the organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines said, “We will send a strong team to 2014 Asian Duathlon Championship in Sri Lanka that is capable of bringing back the crown to the country after 10 years.”

Ryan Mendoza of the Philippine Air Force clinched the men’s title when the country hosted the continental championship at the Clark Special Economic Zone in 2004. Mendoza followed up his feat with another gold-medal showing at the duathlon’s debut in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Pattaya, Thailand.

World Duathlon Championship 2013 veteran Mirasol Abad and the Philippines’ top duathlete Robeno Javier banner the tough field of the race sponsored by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Tourism Department, Standard Insurance, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Inc., Gatorade, David’s Salon, Fitness First, Lifestyle Subic Bay and Green Triathlon.

Expected to crowd out Javier are the other PH team members who are also seasoned internationalists, namely Carlo Pedregosa, Jimmuel Patilan and Bigboy Robinson Javier.

In the distaff side, Mary Pauline Fornea is expected to hound Abad throughout the standard 10-kilometer run/40-km bike/5-km run grind.

Also expected to dish out fine performances are triathletes John Chicano, Nikko Huelgas and Justine Chiongbian so with budding duathletes Joey Delos Reyes, Jeric Buhian and Baltazar Valencia.

Last year’s Asian Duathlon Championship’s challenging technical course with Remy Field as the transition area will test the mettle of the elite competitors and age-groupers. Post-race activities will be held at the nearby Subic gymnasium.

The Junior participants (16-19 years-old) and age-groupers aged 16 and above will take a stab at the sprint distance course of 5-km run/20-km bike/2.5-km run.

A 2.5-km run/12-km bike/2.5-km run course for the Youth Mini-Sprint category is also on tap.

Currently, entry fees for standard distance is P2,000 and for Sprint and Mini-Sprint P1,500. Effective November 1, rates will appreciate to P2,500 (Standard) and P2,000 (Sprint/Mini).

TRAP-registered athletes can avail themselves of 10% discount while students and senior citizens are entitled to 20% discount.

Abad books slot to 2013 World Games

MIRASOL Abad made history for Philippine duathlon when she earned a sport in the 2013 World Games in Colombia with a strong third place finish in the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships yesterday at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Competing against the best from Japan, Abad, a 27-year-old native of Davao City, engaged two-time Olympian Ai Ueda in a neck-and-neck race only to lose steam in the final two kilometers of the run leg.

“She (Ueda) maintained her strong pace in the last two kilometers so I decided to slow down to ensure I’ll be able to finish the race. I was really expecting to do well after a second place finish in the Malakoff Powerman, Malaysia last week and I’m very much satisfied with a third place finish,” said Abad, who negotiated the 10K run, 40K bike and 5K run event in 2:01.57.

A multi-awarded triathlete seeing action in only her second duathlon race, Ueda, 29, led from start to finish and won in 2:00:54 while teammate Eri Miyazawa outsprinted Abad in the last 150 meters to claim the silver medal in 2:01:47.

“It was a fruitful hosting as Abad became the first duathlete from the Philippines to compete in a World event. We will try to look for a good duathlon coach from abroad to help train Abad,” said TRAP president Tom Carrasco Jr.

John Chicano, 21, clocked (1:42:55) and joined Robinson Estevez (1:43:43) and Nikko Huelgas (1:44:11) in sweeping the men’s Under 23 Elite competition while Cebu’s Justine Chiongbian (37:51) and Olongapo’s Jose Nobles (37:54) posted a one-two finish in the mini-sprint race as they atoned for the poor performance of the men’s elite team.

The top five in the elite divisions advanced to the World Games, with former Asian champion Airi Sawada (2:04:57) and Joyce Cheung of Hong Kong (2:07:11) completing the cast in the female elite class of the event backed by Century Tuna and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Fitness First, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Standard Insurance and Gatorade.

“I’m very happy with the win since I am a triathlete racing only in duathlon for the second time,” said Ueda, a Beijing and London Olympics veteran who bagged the Asian women’s title.

Sergey Yakovlev of Russia, despite arriving in the country barely 24 hours before the race, dominated Japanese rivals Yuka Fukaura and Morimichi Iihoshi and topped the men’s elite class with a time of 1:43:14.

Fukaura settled for second, just four ticks behind, and retained his Asian title Iihoshi finished third in 1:43:41. Japan’s Tadashi Mori (1:43:44) and Thomas Bruins of Netherlands (1:44:27) completed the top five in the men’s elite class.

Ryan Mendoza, the 2006 Asian champion, emerged as the top Filipino in the elite race, finishing seventh in 1:46:59.

National pool member Victoria Deldio won a silver medal in the female mini-sprint (43:51). Malaysian Zoe Bowder won the gold in 43:28. (Malaya)

All Set For Asian Duathlon

Duathletes from Jordan, Syria and Iran are likely to crowd Continental powerhouse Japan for the elite honors in the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships on Nov. 25 at Subic Bay Freeport.

Japan’s Yuya Fukaura and Morimichi Lihoshi, ranked Nos. 33 and 59, respectively, in the world, will be challenged by Jordan’s Isha bi Abedalaziz, Syria’s Samir Hajazi and Iran’s Mohammad Ashgari Khatooni for the men’s title.

Out to stop London Games veteran Ai Ueda of Japan in the distaff side are Iran’s Roghaye Sharifi and Zeinab Agha Hasan Nooshbadi and Singapore’s Zhiyun Lin.

Sharifi and Nooshabadi are Iran’s first elite female duathletes and their participation is a first in Asian duathlon history.

Mirasol Abad and Monica Torres, who was previously ranked No. 4 in the world, will spearhead the country’s campaign along with Augusto Benedicto and Javier Robeno.

Airman Ryan Mendoza topped the continent’s premier 10-kilometer run-40km bike-5km run grind in 2006.

Top duathletes vie for Asian duathlon slots

MANILA - Over 100 top age-group duathletes from 19 countries vie for qualifying slots in the 2013 Elite Duathlon World Championships (World Games) in the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships set Nov. 25 in Subic Bay.

Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) members Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Syria and Iran have confirmed participation in the event organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) with Malaysia set to field in 20 entries.

Duathletes from Brazil, Australia, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Germany, Russia, Canada and New Zealand have also joined the event.

As based on the rules of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), the top five male and female athletes of each ITU Continental Qualification Event will gain slots in the Elite Duathlon World Championships (World Games) set July 26-27 in Cali, Colombia. In total, 110 male and female duathletes will compete in the World Championships which was confirmed by the ASTC during its executive board meeting in Auckland, New Zealand recently.

Century Tuna duathlon up at Subic Freeport

MANILA - Top duathletes from Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Syria and Iran clash for honors in the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships Nov. 25 at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Records established during the 2006 Asian Duathlon Championships are expected to fall as a fast race course has been mapped out by ASTC (Asian Triathlon Confederation) technical committee chairman Ramon Marchan who led an ocular inspection of several roads and sites at the Freeport with TRAP officials Rick Reyes, Fabie David and coach Melvin Fausto.

The new race course, which will serve both standard (10K run - 40K bike - 5K run) and sprint distance (5K run - 20K bike - 2.5K run) events, was designed to ensure the safety of both participants and spectators and minimize traffic disruption.

With the Remy Field track oval as transition area, the two run legs will stretch out covering the commercial zones, Waterfront Road and reach the lighthouse as its turning point. The bike leg, on the other hand, will stretch from the oval to Rizal Highway, Argonaut Highway and San Bernardo Road.

At stake are cash prizes worth over $5,000, specially designed medals and gift items for winners of Elite, U-23, Junior Elite, Youth, Adult Sprint and age-groupers.

Subic stages biggest-ever duathlon event

MANILA - More than 600 duathletes from around Asia are seeing action in the continent’s biggest duathlon event, the Subic Bay Asian Duathlon Championships (ADC) presented by Century Tuna on Nov. 25.

Organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), the event highlights top continental honors for run-bike-run competitors at stake with the Elite, Under-23, Junior Elite and Youth (13-15) categories.

ASTC’s Balwant Singh Kler confirmed that the ADC will serve as an official qualifier for the 2013 World Duathlon Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The event sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Fitness First, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines (ACIP) and Gatorade, will take place around the Freeport area with a 10K run, 40K bike and 5K run standard distance course for Elite, U23 and age-group competitors. A sprint distance course of 5K run-20K bike-2.5K run will be set for Junior Elite and Youth participants. The organizers are designing a challenging and exciting course assuring a spectator-friendly configuration.

Expected to join in are world-ranked duathletes from 25 member countries of the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC), including Japan, South Korea, China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

On the local front, Robeno Javier and Mirasol Abad will lead the charge followed by their teammates Nikko Huelgas, Robin Estevez, Carlo Pedregosa and Kim Mangrobang.
