Donnelly and Hayashi Rule the Waves at 2026 Subic Bay International Triathlon

The 2026 NTT Asia Triathlon Cup Subic Bay (SuBIT) concluded this past weekend at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, featuring dominant performances from international stars and rising local talents. 

Canadian Liam Donnelly and Japan’s Manami Hayashi secured the top spots in the elite categories, marking a high-energy start to the triathlon season. 

Elite Division Highlights 

In the Men's Elite category, Liam Donnelly (CAN) delivered a stellar performance, finishing the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) in 56:16. He managed to hold off Kazakhstan's Daryn Konysbayev, who took silver, and Japan's Takuto Oshima, who rounded out the podium with bronze. 

The Women's Elite race saw Manami Hayashi (JPN) successfully defend her title with a time of 1:02:29. She led a competitive field, finishing just ahead of fellow Japanese athlete Ayame Hayashi and Turkey's Sinem Tous Servera.

World’s top triathletes to compete at the Subic Bay 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup

All roads lead to this premier Freeport as the world’s top triathletes compete at the 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup in Subic Bay on May 4-5, 2024.

According to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, “Top Filipino triathletes Kim Mangrobang and Fer Casares will go up against the top triathletes of the world this coming 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup Subic Bay elite division.”

He added that six-time Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) gold medalist Mangrobang and 2023 men’s elite champion Casares will compete alongside other fellow Filipino triathletes such as Raven Alcoseba, Erika Burgos, Josh Ramos, veteran John Chicano and Kira Ellis.

“So expect an exciting weekend this May as these top Filipino athletes will compete in the Elite Men and Elite Women of the SUBIT 2024 on its 31st year here,” he added.

The official revealed that 16 countries will take part in the 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup Subic, including from Iceland, Japan, Australia, Taipei, Canada, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa and the Philippines.

Organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines and in cooperation with the SBMA, Subic Bay Freeport will be the venue for the said event. Aliño mused that Subic Bay Freeport will cheer for the Filipino athletes as they compete against the best contenders in the world. “We want them to feel that we are proud of them representing our country,” he added.

Australians, HK ruled in 2023 Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT)

Australians Oscar Dart and Charlotte McShane ruled the sprint senior elite category in the 30th Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT) over the weekend.

Dart claimed the gold medal in the men's division after posting the best aggregate time of 52 minutes and five seconds in the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer (km), bike and 5-km run race of the event billed as the 2023 NTT AST Subic Bay Asia Cup.

Joshua Ferris, also from Australia, placed second (52:12), while 2022 champion Ren Sato of Japan was third (52:23).

Sato's teammates, Genta Uchida (52:29) and Jumpei Furuya (52:38), finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

McShane, who was born in Scotland but moved with her family to Australia in 2005, topped the women's division in 58:43.

Chinese Yifan Yang registered 58:54 to settle for second place, followed by Australian Ellie Hoitink (58:58).

The rest of the top 10 finishers were China's Meiyi Lu (58:54) and compatriot Angi Huang (59:07), Japanese Manami Hayashi (59:21), Hungarian Zsofia Kovacs (59:23), Slovakians Zuzana Michalickova (59:30) and Romana Gajdosova (59:37), and Japanese Chisato Nakajima (59.40).

On the other hand, Renz Wynn Corbin and Karen Andrea Manayon of Talisay, Cebu ruled the Under-23 Elite category.

Corbin clocked 1:01:38 to beat Irenold Reig Jr. (1:04:13) and Mark Joshua Perez (1:04:58).

Meanwhile, Hong Kong swept the Super Sprint Youth (13-15 years old) category.

The 15-year-old Nok Hei Wong finished the 750m (swim)-20km (bike)-5km (run) race with an aggregate time of 32 minutes and 05 seconds to pocket the gold medal in the boys' division.

Lok Shi Lam won the silver medal in 33:04 while Kwong Hei Anson Tsang clocked 33:07 to settle for the bronze medal.

Lai Ki Nicole Man, 15, captured the gold medal in the girls' division with a total time of 36 minutes and 17 seconds.

Petra Stamenovic placed second (36:53) followed by Sarah Elise Modiano (37:52).

In the Sprint Para-Triathlon, Cebu City's Alex Silverio bagged the gold medal in one hour, 18 minutes, and 26 seconds while teammate Cedei Nemeño Abellana got the silver medal in 1:44:22 in the men's PT4 category.

Michael Bayani topped the men's PT5 category in 1:22:39 while Edison Badillo ranked second (1:34:57).

National team coaches Ani de Leon Brown and George Vilog lived up to expectations as they ruled the “Battle of the Legends.” 

Brown, who mentors the Philippine women’s squad to next month’s Phnom Penh SEA Games, clocked 43 minutes and 38 seconds to beat the field that included Mimi Lucas and Maris Bondoc, second and third with a 54:12 and 54:49, respectively. 

Vilog, a former national titlist and Arafura Games junior champion, topped the men’s side in 38:22 ahead of Noel Salvador (39:20) and Allan Barredo (40:55), who completed the podium in the race covering 500 meters of swim, 10 kms of bike and 2.5 kms of run.

Chicano, Alcoseba best Filipino finishers in Subic International Triathlon

John Chicano and Raven Alcoseba became the best performing Filipinos as Japanese bets reigned supreme in the 2022 NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone last Sunday.

 

Chicano clocked 1 hour, 51 minutes and 2 seconds to finish at 22nd place in the men’s division that was topped by Asia’s No. 3 and world No. 56 Ren Sato, who timed 1:43:11.

 

Chicano’s teammate John Remolino was at 23rd with 1:52:11, while Iñaki Lobres finished at 25th with 1:54:22. 

 

Japan made a 1-2 finish with Ryoya Tamazaki settling behind Sato in 1:43:37. Australia’s Oscar Dart came in third with 1:43:48.

 

In the distaff side, Alcoseba finished 13th after timing 2:09:56 behind eventual champion and Youth Olympic games gold medalist Yuka Sato, who posted a winning time of 1:58:49.

 

Hong Kong’s Choi Yan Yin Hilda pocketed the silver in 2:00:37 while Slovakia’s Margareta Bicanova settled for bronze in 2:01:02.

 

The 1.5-kilometer swim, 40km bike and 10km run race serves as an exposure for national athletes bound to the 31st Southeast Asian Games slated in Hanoi, Vietnam next week. (Manila Bulletin)

SuBIT gets added prestige

The 2019 NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT) Asian Cup slated on April 27 and 28 gained more prestige as it ushers in the 2019 One Belt One Road Triathlon series.

This arrangement highlights the enduring relationship for decades between the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP), the Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association (CTTA) and the China Triathlon Sports Association (CTSA).

Further, CTSA, for this year, will dispatch the Chinese national team to compete in the SuBIT with TRAP reciprocating with a team of triathletes seeing action in the 2019 Lianyungang ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup and 2019 Jiayuguan ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup. The latter events serve as the second and third legs of the One Belt One Road Triathlon series.

“For the past years, TRAP and CTSA have been keeping a good relationship and communication. Thanks for the invitation and help from TRAP, Chinese National Triathlon Teams participated in Subic Bay ASTC Triathlon Asian Cups for many times and got good results. Meanwhile, our two national federations have always been supporting each other during ASTC Congress elections and other international activities,” CTSA Secretary General Chen Xiaoran said.

For its part, the CTTA is sending the Chinese Taipei national team and a good number of age-groupers to the SuBIT.

Registration for the SuBIT is ongoing with entry fees now set at P5,500 per participant for Standard Distance, P5,000 for Sprint Distance, P4,000 for Super Sprint Distance and P9,000 for Team Relay.

Azevedo tops Subic Bay International Triathlon

PORTUGUESE journeyman Filipe Azevedo ended the dominance of the Japanese in the 25th edition of the NTT Asia Cup Subic Bay International Triathlon held this past weekend at ACEA Subic Bay in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Azevedo used a strong kick to outrun Korea’s Min Ho Heo (1:50:55) and Japan’s Takumi Hojo (1:50:59) with a winning time of 1:50:50 in the grueling 1.5 Kilometer swim – 40 Kilometer bike – 10 Kilometer run Elite Men’s contest organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines in partnership with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

On the distaff side in the event sponsored by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Arena, New Balance, Philippine Star, Gatorade, Omega Pain Killer Liniment, Standard Insurance, Lighthouse Marina Resort, Century Tuna, Gatorade, Subic Holiday Villas, Travelers Hotel, ACEA, Asian Center for Insulation and Solar Sports, China’s Zhong Mengying (2:01:19), Zhang Yi (2:03:44) and Yang Ling (2:04:49) swept the Top 3 positions in dominating fashion leading from start to finish from the swim leg to biking and superb runs of under 38 minutes under the sun.

The Philippines’ very own Kim Mangrobang settled for 8th place in the Elite Women’s race timing 2:07:09. The 2017 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist’s finish was good considering the very strong field of competitors.

The Philippines somehow salvaged its pride with the victories of JC Abad, Edward Macalalad and Julius Constantino in the Men’s Under-23 (U/23) contest. They finished with times of 2:03:33, 2:04:23 and 2:07:46 respectively.

On Saturday, April 21, Singapore, Hong Kong and China’s junior triathletes dominated the sprint distance events with Filipino boys grabbing the 13-15 category. 13-15 girls category was dominated by the Wright sisters of Hong Kong sweeping Top 3 posts while the boys 16-19 race saw Hong Kong at 1-2 and China at 3rd place. Most swimmers showed superiority in the swim leg.

The 2018 NTT Asia Cup Subic Bay International Triathlon attracted 800 participants and was supervised by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) with Kouji Koginasawa as technical delegate. Subic Bay International Triathlon fires off April 21

The 3-in-1 2018 NTT Asia Cup Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) will unfold at the Acea in Subic Bay on April 21 and 22.

As an Asian Cup Series 2018 event under the supervision of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and Asian Triathlon Confederation, it offers to top local and international elite athletes ITU points for Asian and world rankings and qualification to major international competitions such as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics triathlon event and other international events.

To be held in conjunction with SUBIT sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Arena, New Balance, Philippine Star, Gatorade, Omega Pain Killer Liniment, Standard Insurance, Lighthouse Marina Resort, Century Tuna, Gatorade, Subic Holiday Villas, Travelers Hotel, Acea, Asian Center for Insulation and Solar Sports on the final day is the Subic Bay Southeast Asian Championships envisioned to alternate with the Southeast Asian Games Triathlon.

Serving as the curtain raiser on the first day of action is the local event for youth participants serving as a test race for the Asian Youth Olympic Games qualifier, which will be held on June 17.

Tom Carrasco, president of both the organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) and Southeast Asian Games Triathlon Association (SEATA) said, “This year’s staging of SUBIT will be one big celebration.”

“We will not only commemorate the 25th anniversary of SUBIT, by far the country’s longest running triathlon competition, and the partnership of Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and TRAP. We will celebrate TRAP’s award bestowed by Philippine Sportswriters Association as the “National Sports Association of the Year 2017”.

“On top of that, SUBIT 2018 serves as the vehicle for the revival of SEATA which was founded in Subic Bay Freeport 10 years ago”, Carrasco stressed.

Japan, HK split honors in Subic Int'l triathlon

Asian triathlon heavyweights Japan and Hong Kong split top honors in the open elite division Sunday in the NTT-ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Japanese Ryosuke Maeda, ranked in the Top 10 back home, ruled the men’s race in 1:53.59 while HK bet Yan Yin Hilda Choi won the distaff side in 2:10.02.

Despite difficulties coping with the heat and humidity, Maeda said he expected to win the race that started at the ACEA beach resort and ended at the oval track of Remy Field.

Choi, on the other hand, said: “It was a nice race, good swim and I had a good bike pack with Claire setting the pace which helped us a lot.”

The HK lass was referring to Claire Adorna who set the pace in swimming and cycling before fading to eighth place.

Asian Triathlon Confederation president Justin Park and Legazpi Mayor Noel Rosal were on hand to award the trophies to the winners of the event organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

Korean Ji Hwan Kim finished second behind Maedan with a time of 1: 54.44 while another Japanese, Kotaro Watanabe, took third place in 1:55.59.

Rounding out the top five finishers were Korean Seung Hun Seo (1: 56.39) and Japanese Genta Uchida (1:56.45).

John Chicano was the best-placed Filipino followed by Mark Hosana and 2015 Southeast Asian Games champion Nikko Huelgas. All three, however, failed to land in the Top 10.

24th Subic Bay Int'l Triathlon lures record field

Nostalgia has gripped the country’s triathlon community in the run-up to the NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon slated at Subic Bay Freeport Zone on April 29 and 30.

With its hash tag #balikSubit, the country’s premier standard triathlon celebrating its 24th edition (longest running event in Subic Bay) has already over 800 entries in its registry book.

Mangrobang leads 1-2 Pinay finish in Subic International Triathlon

Kim Mangrobang led an impressive 1-2 finish by the Filipino bets in the women’s division of the Open Elite while the Aussie bets dominated the men’s side of the 23rd NTT-ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon (SuBIT) yesterday.

Mangrobang, the country’s No. 2 triathlete who had to cut short her high performance training in Portugal due to her father’s death last week, showed the gains she made by besting the field at Remy Field in two hours, 10 minutes, 40 seconds.

She made her move in the final 10K run leg after keeping pace with teammates Fil-Am Kim Kilgroe and SEAG gold medalist Claire Adorna in the 1.5K swim and 40K bike legs.

“I had no plans of joining but my coach told me just to race since I was already here. I just wanted to finish but when we got out in the run leg, I felt I could take it all the way to the finish,” said the 24-year-old Mangrobang after the race organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) and held in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and presented by the SBMA Tourism Department with support from the Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission.

Two weeks from now, Mangrobang who also ruled SuBIT’s Under-23 division two years ago, will be in Japan for the Asian Triathlon Championship, eyeing a top five finish to earn ITU points in her quest to make it to the 2020 Olympic Games.

Kilgroe, who lives in California but traces her mother’s roots in Zambales, conceded to Mangrobang in the run leg.

“I tried to catch up in the run leg but she was too strong. But I’m happy with my performance as I was expecting a podium finish this time from my 16th place last year, I prepared more seriously this time, “ said Kilgroe, who clocked 2:12.29.

Hong Kong’s Kate Rutherford timed 2:13.15 for third followed by injured Adorna in 2:19.59.

“I was frustrated because my foot injury is still bothering me, particularly in the bike, it was painful and was still hurting even after the race,” said Adorna, a five-time UAAP Most Outstanding Athlete.

Ting Ting Chang from Taipei came in fifth in 2:20.36.

Aussie Joel Tobin White, running his second SuBIT race, also turned in an impressive solo finish in 1:56.09 while Greek James Chronis, who used to run for Australia until he opted to campaign for his native country two years ago, placed second in 1:56.45 while another Aussie, James Thorp, placed third in 1:56.58.

Tobin White, ranked sixth back home, pulled away from closest pursuer Chronis after the first lap of the run leg.

“I put in a surge while he slowed down, I knew I could make it if I did well in the swim leg, and I did, the heat also did not bother me at all,” said the 23 year old professional triathlete who credited his coach Danielle Stefano at the Victorian Institute of Sport back in Melbourne.

Best placed among the male Filipino triathletes was Olongapo native John Chicano who finished eighth in 2:01.42.

“I gave chase in the bike leg but the foreign competiton was just too strong. It’s all right, because I met my target here,” Chicano said.

In the men’s U-23, Singaporean Sumedha Um Kian Tat went home with the title, clocking 2:20.54, followed by Macau entries Chak Long Un (2:21.37) and Chi Meng Ieong (2:26.53).

Even as he admitted that the field was not as strong as it used to be because of another World Cup race in China on the same day, TRAP president Tom Carrasco, said “it was a good opportunity for our triathletes particularly Mangrobang to show what they are capable of doing.”

“We are on track with our preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games where we hope to qualify for the first time,” he said. (The Philippine Star)

HK bets deliver on 1st day of the NTT-ASTC Subic Bay Int'l Traithlon

THE highly-touted HongKong triathlon team delivered as expected on Day 1 of the 23rd NTT-ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon ( SuBIT ), sweeping the top spots yesterday in both divisions of the junior elite sprint competition that started and ended at the ACEA Beach inside the sprawling Subic Freeport.

So dominating were in the HK triathletes that in the men's junior elite, Oscar Louise Coggins, Michael Lam, and ShingHim Wong , James Tan, and Tsz To Wong took the top 5 places with Coggins leading practically from start to finish en route to a solo finish in 58: 28, six seconds ahead of Lam. Wong meanwhile negotiated the 750m. swim-10K bike- 5K run sprint distance race in 59 : 12, followed by Tan, 1:01.24 and Wong, 1 : 00. 31.

Cebu’s Andrew Remolino, 16, from Talisay, winner of the first two legs of the TRAP NAGT Series in Subic and Cebu , was the best placed Filipino triathlete in sixth place in the event organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and presented by the SBMA Tourism Department with support from the Philippine Olympic Committee ( POC ) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

She also finished first in last year's mini-sprint distance in the same event. Singapore's Jeremia Christy Suriadi was a distant second in 1:12 : 49 while in third place was top seed Zoe Natasha Bowden of Malaysia who clocked 1:13:51.

“ I believe the support we get from the government and the fact that we have around 30 active triathlon clubs in Hong Kong help us a lot,” said Fenalla Ng, president of the Hong Kong Triathlon Association who accompanied her wards to Subic, she is a former swimmer and rower who has competed in 3 Olympic Games and 5 Asian Games.

On his part, TRAP President and current POC Chairman Tom Carrasco said he really expected Hong Kong to dominate but remained optimistic of the development of his young triathletes, “ we are already putting in place our long -term preparation for the 2018 Youth Olympics where we hope to qualify 3 girls and 3 boys,” he explained.

Filipina Vicky Deldio, an Olympic Youth Games veteran, ran her personal best time but fell short by nine seconds.

World-ranked triathletes in Subic for SuBIT 2016

Several world-ranked triathletes led by former World Junior Champion and former ITU number one Felicity Abram and Melinda Vernon of Australia will test their mettle in the elite competition (2nd day) of the two-day NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon 2016 which will commence on April 16 at the ACEA Subic Bay.

The elite competition (Standard Distance 1.5 Km swim – 40 Km bike – 10 Km run) offers ITU qualifying points for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic triathlon event and has already attracted the participation of Mohamad Alsabbagh (Syria), James Chronis (Greece), Chris George (Australia), Shen-Yen Hsieh (Chinese Taipei), Rikigoro Shinozuka (Malaysia), Jiayu Tan (Singapore), James Thorp (Australia), Joel Tobin White (Australia), Chun Yin Tse (Hong Kong), Yuki Umeda (Japan) and national triathletes John Chicano, Mark Hosana, Jonard Saim and Deo Timbol.

Five-in-one Subic international triathlon

The two-day NTT ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon 2016 is a five-in-one affair comprising a leg of the Asia Cup Series, National Age-Group Championships, Inter-Club Competition, national tryouts and Age Group Select Men, a new feature in the local triathlon scene.

On tap on the first day are sprint distance for Elite Junior, Age-Group Junior and Age-Group Adult and mini sprint distance for men and women. All races will start and finish at ACEA Subic Bay.

Elite Open, Elite U23, age groupers and club members see action over the standard distance (1.5K swim-40K bike-10K run) on April 17 from 5:30 a.m. also with the finish line located at Remy Field.

Abdul, Fule secure Asian Cup slots

Former national standout John Abdul put on an impressive performance in the recent K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) to earn entry to the Asian Cup triathlon this October.

Abdul, who did not register as an elite competitor in any race over the last 12 months, topped the crowded 35-39 age-group in Subic with a time of 2 hours, 11 to secure an all-expense paid trip to the ITU Hong Kong International Triathlon.

Keshia Fule topped the female 25-29 age-group of the event sponsored by K-Swiss, Century Tuna, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Tourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Harbor Point, Ayala Malls, Canon, Traveler’s Hotel, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island, Asian Center for Insulation Philippines (ACIP) , Gatorade, SPEEDO, Standard Insurance, and Green Triathlon to likewise obtain the same privilege.

Kim wins gold for PH

ASIAN Games-bound Kim Mangrobang delivered for the Philippines as the diminutive 22-year-old triathlete came from behind to rule the Elite Under-23 female category of the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon for a gold-medal finish Sunday morning inside the Subic Bay Freeport.

Finishing second in the 1.5K swim leg, Mangrobang initiated a breakaway in the 40K bike stage, but could not sustain it and decided to stay with the lead pack until the final 10K run, where she took the lead right from the start and never looked back en route to a solo finish in 2:19.08.

She was followed by Taipei bets Wei Chen Chien (2:20.54) and Yi Hui Liu (2:21.57).

“Expected ko manalo. Maganda ang training at kundisyon ko para dito. Last year fifth lang ako. I am happy with my improvement,” said Mangrobang, who is eyeing a first-ever stint in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016, but admitted she has to compete in international races to earn points to qualify for the Olympics.

Another Filipino and top-ranked triathlete Nikko Huelgas missed a turn early in the final run leg and lost a few seconds. He paid the price as he settled for second place in the Elite Under-23 Male category 17 seconds behind Taipei’s Pei Yen Hsu (2:00.21). The 22-year-old Huelgas clocked 2 :00.38, followed by another Filipino entry in John Leerams Chicano (2:01.37) in the race also backed by Century Tuna, SBMA, Speedo, Standard Insurance, Gatorade, Davis Salon, Asian Centre for Insulation, and Harbor Point Mall where the race finished. Filipino bets strike gold in Subic

FILIPINO para-triathletes Sixto Ducay and Andy Avellana struck for gold in their respective categories in yesterday morning’s staging of the second Asian Para triathlon Championships held near the All Hands beach inside the Subic Bay Freeport.

As part of the two-day K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon, the event attracted 11 entries from Japan, which dominated the other categories, Malaysia and Korea aside from host Philippines.

Sorsogon native Ducay, 46 , exacted revenge against Malaysian Mohd Sabkibin Arifin in the Tri 4 category to take the gold, clocking 1:17.9 in the 750m swim-20K bike-5 K run race;

Arifin, who beat Ducay last year in the same race, finished in 1:18.12.

A minimal cerebral palsy victim in his right arm, Ducay posted a come-from-behind win.

“Buti nakabawi ako sa cycling at running legs. Masaya ako at na improve ko time ko last year kahit kulang sa ensayo, “ said Ducay, also a long jumper and middle distance medalist in previous ParaGames.

The other Filipino winner, 38-year-old Andy Avellana, who lost his left leg due to a bus accident, had the easiest time as he had no opposition in the Tri 2 category, completing the distance in 1:44.12.

“Malalakas ang mga kalaban dito at kumpleto sa gamit, naibaba ko ang time ko ngayon compared last year kaya masaya ako,” said Avellana after the race that was also backed by Century Tuna, Standard Insurance, Gatorade, Phil. Toshio Furuhata, a 52-year-old visually impaired entry from Japan, exerted just enough effort after only a week’s rest from a longer triathlon race. THE stage is set for a battle royale among elite triathletes from several countries seeking ITU and ASTC Asian Cup qualification points as the second day of action of the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon commences at 5:45 a.m. This Sunday at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Expected to strive hard for the Elite Male title are Japan’s Kohei Shimomura (ITU rank no. 142), Jordan’s Fanous Lawrence (ranked 156th) Hong Kong’s Perry Wong (ranked 180th), Korea’s 2012 Olympian Min Ho Heo and Azerbaijan’s Alexander Iatcenko.

The redesigned 10-Km run this year will course through the central business district, with the finish line set at the grounds of Harbor Point Ayala Mall.

Visually impaired bets join Subic tilt

A TRIO of visually impaired paratriathletes will be leading a crack team from Japan to engage challengers from Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines in the Paratriathlon Asian Championships event of the long-running K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon, which will kick off at 7:20 a.m. on April 26 at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Japan is fielding visually impaired Ryu Nakazawa, Toshihiro Shirae and Atsuko Yamadain the sprint distance paratriathlon competition (750 meter swimming, 20kilometer biking and 5 kilometer running), together with teammates ShingoKuboyama, Noboyulki Domon, Toshio Furuhata and Miho Hamada.

Others competing for the paratriathlon titles, include Jun Ha Lee (Korea); 2013 SUBIT paratriathlon gold medallist Andy Avellana (Philippines); Godfrey Taberna (Philippines) and 2013 SUBIT paratriathlon silver medallist Sixto Ducay (Philippines).

Subic Bay Int’l Triathlon expected to lure big field

Organizers expect a loaded two-day weekend when the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon is held on April 26-27 at the Subic Bay Freeport in Olongapo City, Zambales.

“This is actually a 5-in-1 event,” said Triathlon Association of the Philippines secretary general Ramon Marchand during a press launch yesterday at the Seafood Island Restaurant at the Mall of Asia.

Marchand said the SUBIT Elite Open for men and women on April 27 will remain the centerpiece event and forms part of the Asia Cup 2014 Series where the winners will get International Triathlon Union points for Asian and world rankings.

“These ranking points will serve as part of their qualification for major international competitions,” he said.

Also on tap during the two-day meet is the National Age Group Championships where the winners in the boys’ and girls’ divisions will earn the right to represent the country in the World Age Group competitions in Edmonton Canada.

The event also serves as national tryouts “where promising athletes will be scouted for the national pool,” including the junior, Under-23 and Elite Open classes.

To spice up the event, TRAP has included the Asian Paratriathlon Championships for the second straight year in the event also sponsored by Century Tuna, Speedo, Harbor Point, Ayala Malls, Canon, SBMA, PSC, Gatorade, Standard Insurance, SM City Olongapo and Travelers Hotel.

Marchand stressed the SUBIT “remains a green event so we encourage all of our participants and fans to curb waste and pollution before and during the event.”

TRAP, partners relaunch Green Triathlon in Subic

MANILA, Philippines - The Green Triathlon initiative of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) shifts to high gear year with the help of its strategic partners.

With the staging of the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) April 26-27, the TRAP and partner hotels Subic Bay Travelers Hotel and Event Center Inc., Lighthouse Marina Resort, Buena Casa Hotel and Subic International Hotel will emphasize through examples the ways on how to preserve the natural environment through the proven methods of reusing, reducing and recycling waste materials.

The strategies are in line with the pro-environment policies not only of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) but also of the Subic Bay Freeport which itself banned the use of plastic and Styrofoam since early 2013.

Since 2011, the Green Triathlon initiative in the Philippines has been promoted by the TRAP with the help of a grant from the Olympic Solidarity (OS) through its Sports and Environment program.

The initiative focused on reducing waste and pollution in triathlon events and those of its related sports. The environmental awareness of the program is used as a model of positive lifestyle change among triathletes, coaches, fans, sports clubs, venue hosts, the media, sponsors, suppliers, volunteers and the general public.

Meanwhile, Daniel Sng of Singapore has been named as the technical delegate of the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon while Uzbekistan’s Ms. Olga Blokhina is the assistant technical delegate.

K-Swiss Subic International Triathlon is its biggest ever

THE 2014 K-Swiss ITU Subic International Triathlon, slated April 26 and 27 at Subic Bay Freeport, is set to be the biggest edition ever as it enters its third decade.

Secretary general Mon Marchan of the organizing Triathlon Association of the Philippines said stakes will be higher as the event serves as a 5-in-1 affair, laced by its lofty status as one of the legs of the Asia Cup series.

As an Asia Cup series leg, SUBIT stakes ITU points for local and international elite athletes, who are bidding to improve their World and Asian rankings.
