Japan, HK split honors in Subic Int'l triathlon

Asian triathlon heavyweights Japan and Hong Kong split top honors in the open elite division Sunday in the NTT-ASTC Subic Bay International Triathlon at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Japanese Ryosuke Maeda, ranked in the Top 10 back home, ruled the men’s race in 1:53.59 while HK bet Yan Yin Hilda Choi won the distaff side in 2:10.02.

Despite difficulties coping with the heat and humidity, Maeda said he expected to win the race that started at the ACEA beach resort and ended at the oval track of Remy Field.

Choi, on the other hand, said: “It was a nice race, good swim and I had a good bike pack with Claire setting the pace which helped us a lot.”

The HK lass was referring to Claire Adorna who set the pace in swimming and cycling before fading to eighth place.

Asian Triathlon Confederation president Justin Park and Legazpi Mayor Noel Rosal were on hand to award the trophies to the winners of the event organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).

Korean Ji Hwan Kim finished second behind Maedan with a time of 1: 54.44 while another Japanese, Kotaro Watanabe, took third place in 1:55.59.

Rounding out the top five finishers were Korean Seung Hun Seo (1: 56.39) and Japanese Genta Uchida (1:56.45).

John Chicano was the best-placed Filipino followed by Mark Hosana and 2015 Southeast Asian Games champion Nikko Huelgas. All three, however, failed to land in the Top 10.

Subic hosts ParaTriathlon Asian meet

Asia’s best paratriathletes converge on April 29 in Subic Bay Freeport Zone for the ASTC ParaTriathlon Asian Championships 2017.

Organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) under the supervision of technical officials of the ITU and the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC), the event has attracted close to 50 participants from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia, and Kygyzstan.

The Philippines will be led by Sixto Ducay and the blind siblings Jerome and Joshua Nelmida.

The technical delegate in the race is Koji Koganezawa while Daniel Sng of Singapore is the referee.

The race, supported by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Subic Travelers Hotel, ASTC, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, and Gatorade, will start at the ACEA Beach Resort for the 750 meter swim followed by 18 kilometer biking reaching up to Argonaut Highway and 5 kilometers running along San Bernardo Road finishing near ACEA.

At stake for the Top 3 winners of the paratriathlon categories of PT1, PT2, PT3, PT4 and PT5 are qualifying points to the World ParaTriathlon Championships, specially designed medals and winners’ t-shirts. Ducay shines in 2015 Asian Paratriathlon

Sixto Ducay overcame a poor swim to claim second place in the competitive PT4 category in yesterday’s ASTC Asian Paratriathlon Championships 2015 that started and ended at the Sands of Triboa, Subic Bay Freeport.

Competing with a left arm impairment, the 47-year-old Ducay never lost his focus despite placing fifth out of six participants in the swim leg to spearhead the Philippines’ two silver and a bronze medal performance in this race organized by Triathlon Association of the Philippines and sanctioned by the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC), Asian Paralympic Committee and Philspada.

Andy Avellano took the second silver medal over compatriot Arnal Aba in the PT2 in this event sponsored by Subic Bay Metropolitan AuthorityTourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, ASTC, Asian Centre for Insulation Phil., Gatorade, Speedo, SM Cares, Canon and Standard Insurance.

Japan swept the gold medals in the six categories disputed at the 750m swim, 18K bike, 5K run.

A total of seven countries saw action with Hong Kong bagging a silver, Korea and Malaysia taking home a bronze each while Kyrgyzstan and Singapore did not win a medal.

Leading the Japanese invasion was Yokohama World Paratriathlon Championships fourth placer Keiichi Sato who emerged as the fastest paratriathletes with one hour, seven minutes, 20 seconds in PT4.

Other winners were Junpei Kimuna in PT1 (1:11:25), Kenshiro Nakayama in PT2 (1:24:26), Hikeki Uda in PT3 (1:12:15) and Ryu Nakazawa in PT5 (1:14:24) in the male and Atsuko Yamada in female PT5 (1:23:37).

Subic Asian paratriathlon slated August 16

Sixto Ducay, Godfrey Taberna, Arnel Aba, Andy Avellana, and the visually impaired twins Joshua and Jerome Nelmida of the Philippines are all set to engage with their foreign counterparts in their quest for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games as the ASTC Asian ParaTriathlon Championships (APC) 2015 fires off on Aug. 16 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

In the race sanctioned by Asian Paralympic Committee and Philspada, the Filipinos will challenge crack paratriathletes from Japan, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Hongkong and Korea in designated categories of competitions that will cover 750 meter swim – 18 km bike – 5 km run. Paratriathlon has categories of Tri1, Tri2, Tri3, Tri4, Tri5 and Tri6 for newcomers.

The event supported by the SBMA Tourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission, ASTC, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Gatorade, Speedo, Philippine Olympic Committee, Standard Insurance, DZSR Sports Radio 918, Channel 4’s TeleDyaryo Program, RaceDay, SBR.ph, Kikay Runner and PinoyFitness.com, got a boost as Asian Paralympic Committee CEO and acting secretary general Tarek Souei certified the APC as a Rio 2016 Paralympics qualifier where participants can earn points.

Serving as side event are sprint and mini sprint distances (750M swim-20K bike-5K run and 300m-9km-2.5km) which will be joined by members of the national triathlon and duathlon teams. Each competition will start at the Sands of Triboa and end at San Bernardino Street. Sands of Triboa is also the venue for the awarding ceremony which will take place at 9:30 a.m. Team relays will also be held for most beginners.

Race briefings will be held a day before the race for paratriathlon and sprint and mixed relay participants at the Subic Holiday Villas at 4 p.m. Race packets will be distributed all day at the lobby. Subic Bay Asian ParaTriathlon set

IN line with its mandate to develop high-caliber and more competitive national triathlon teams, the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) will be organizing the ASTC Asian ParaTriathlon Championships (APC) 2015 on August 16 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as well as the Philippine National Triathlon Trials (NTT) in Iloilo City on August 22.

For the APC, a record field of around thirty participants from Japan, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea and the Philippines will engage in the competition for the much needed qualifying points for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. At the same time there will be a regular triathlon sprint distance races for elite (mixed relay) and age-groupers at Dungaree Beach in Subic Bay.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Triathlon Trials hosted by Iloilo City headed by Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog will give triathletes from the Visayas region a chance to test their skills and try to qualify for the developmental pool as TRAP continues its search for new talents to represent the country. The event supports the local campaign on strengthening awareness and encouraging the public to support the ongoing Iloilo River Clean-Up Project.

The approved race courses for both Standard (1.5Km swim-40Km bike-10Km run) and Sprint (750M swim-20Km bike-6Km run) distances will start at the beach at Joe II Garden for the swim followed by cycling along the city’s thoroughfares and running using Benigno Aquino Avenue going to Esplanade.

At stake for Standard Distance Top 3 men and Top 3 women finishers are cash prizes of P10,000, P6,000 and P4,000. Olympic slots up in Subic meet

Paratriathletes Sixto Ducay, Andy Avellana and Godfrey Taberna hope to secure Olympic berths when ASTC Asian ParaTriathlon Championships (APC) 2015 is held on Aug. 16 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Ducay (arm disability category), Avellana (above-knee amputee) and Taberna (below-knee disability) will be competing in their new PT (ParaTriathlon) classifications with other bets from around Asia.

Filipino bets strike gold in Subic

FILIPINO para-triathletes Sixto Ducay and Andy Avellana struck for gold in their respective categories in yesterday morning’s staging of the second Asian Para triathlon Championships held near the All Hands beach inside the Subic Bay Freeport.

As part of the two-day K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon, the event attracted 11 entries from Japan, which dominated the other categories, Malaysia and Korea aside from host Philippines.

Sorsogon native Ducay, 46 , exacted revenge against Malaysian Mohd Sabkibin Arifin in the Tri 4 category to take the gold, clocking 1:17.9 in the 750m swim-20K bike-5 K run race;

Arifin, who beat Ducay last year in the same race, finished in 1:18.12.

A minimal cerebral palsy victim in his right arm, Ducay posted a come-from-behind win.

“Buti nakabawi ako sa cycling at running legs. Masaya ako at na improve ko time ko last year kahit kulang sa ensayo, “ said Ducay, also a long jumper and middle distance medalist in previous ParaGames.

The other Filipino winner, 38-year-old Andy Avellana, who lost his left leg due to a bus accident, had the easiest time as he had no opposition in the Tri 2 category, completing the distance in 1:44.12.

“Malalakas ang mga kalaban dito at kumpleto sa gamit, naibaba ko ang time ko ngayon compared last year kaya masaya ako,” said Avellana after the race that was also backed by Century Tuna, Standard Insurance, Gatorade, Phil. Sports Commission, Harbor Point Mall, SBMA, David’s Salon, Speedo and Asian Center for Insulation Philippines.

Toshio Furuhata, a 52-year-old visually impaired entry from Japan, exerted just enough effort after only a week’s rest from a longer triathlon race. He led Japan’s charge as he took line honors and ruled the Tri 5 category race, with the best time of 1:08.14, followed by compatriot Nobuyuki Domon in 1:12.04, and Korean Lee Jun Ha in 1 : 24. 10. Visually impaired bets join Subic tilt

A TRIO of visually impaired paratriathletes will be leading a crack team from Japan to engage challengers from Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines in the Paratriathlon Asian Championships event of the long-running K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon, which will kick off at 7:20 a.m. on April 26 at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Japan is fielding visually impaired Ryu Nakazawa, Toshihiro Shirae and Atsuko Yamadain the sprint distance paratriathlon competition (750 meter swimming, 20kilometer biking and 5 kilometer running), together with teammates ShingoKuboyama, Noboyulki Domon, Toshio Furuhata and Miho Hamada.

Others competing for the paratriathlon titles, include Jun Ha Lee (Korea); 2013 SUBIT paratriathlon gold medallist Andy Avellana (Philippines); Godfrey Taberna (Philippines) and 2013 SUBIT paratriathlon silver medallist Sixto Ducay (Philippines).

Adding importance to the longest-running Olympic distance international triathlon in Asia, sponsored by K-Swiss, Century Tuna, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Tourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission and supported Harbor Point, Ayala Malls, Canon, Traveler’s Hotel, Blackbeard’s Seafood Island, Asian Center for Insulation Philippines, Gatorade, SPEEDO, Standard Insurance, and Green Triathlon is the presence of ITU (International Triathlon Union) classifiers Marguerite Christophers and Peter Steggall, who will determine the paratriathletes’ categories on April 24 and 25.

The 2014 Asian Paratriathlon Championships is part of the Asian Triathlon Confederation and Triathlon ssociation of the Philippines’ efforts to promote paratriathlon, with participation in the 2016 Paralympics in mind.

As of April 19, close to 1,000 participants have signed up for the K-Swiss ITU SUBIT.

Among them are 20 clubs vying for the Inter-Club Competition title, and over 600 age-group triathletes in the Olympic distance aiming for the National Age-Group championship titles and the right to represent the country in the 2014 World Age-Group Championships to be hosted in Canada. (MST Sports)
