Boris Savchenko storms through PSC Puregold Open in Subic

Russian Grandmaster Boris Savchenko demolished the opposition in the PSC Puregold International Open to emerge convincing winner with 9,5/10 points, two and a half points ahead of the nearest followers.

Far behind in the score count GMs Lu Shanglei and Vitaly Sivuk share the second place with 7,0 points each.

The PSC Puregold International Open was organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines from 16-21st November in Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel, Olongapo City.

44 players competed in the main Open Division, with 18 Grandmasters and 15 International Masters in the field.

The Challenger Division had 83 participants. Franz Robert Grafil and Prince Mark Aquino shared the first place with 7,5/9 points each.

Savchenko grabs solo lead; Laylo top Pinoy contender in Subic chess challenge

RUSSIAN Grandmaster Boris Savchenko put a brake to Ukraine GM Vitaly Sivuk’s five-game winning run, hacking out a 35-move win using an unusual line of the Queen’s Pawn Game to vault into the solo lead after four rounds in the Philippine Sports Commission-Puregold International Chess Challenge at the Peninsular Hotel in Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The No. 8 seed Savchenko earlier defeated reigning national champion GM Richard Bitoon in the third round to set up the clash against the newly-minted Philippine International Chess Championship titlist.

Filipino GM Darwin Laylo, meanwhile, stayed a half-point behind the solo leader with 3.5 points with a win and a draw in the two previous rounds.

The 18th seed Laylo downed International Master Oliver Dimakiling in the third round and split the point with Torre in the fourth.

The draw dropped Torre to 3.0 points in the company of fellow Pinoys IM Joel Pimentel and Dimakiling, Sivuk, Russian GMs Mikhail Mozharov and Anton Demchenko, GM Shanglei Lu of China and GM Chakkravarthy Deepan of India.

Mozharov, the no. 7 seed, and Pimentel agreed to a draw after 57 moves of a King’s Indian Fianchetto, Demchenko defeated GM Tigran Kotanjian of Armernia in 42 pushes of a King’s Indian Classical, Lu dealt Bitoon his second straight loss, while Deepan trounced Filipino IM Emmanuel Senador in 54 moves of a Sicilian Moria Gambit.

Trailing behind with 2.5 points are Kotanjian, IM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Narayanan Sunilduth Lyna of India, GM Chen Lin of China and GM Duc Hoa Nguyen of Vietnam.

In the Challenger Division of the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by the PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, Puregold, Burlington Socks and Marc Ventures and Mining and Development Corp., eight players, led by top seed Franz Robert Grafil, share the lead with three points each after three rounds.

Also in the Challenger Division, nine-year-old Mark Jay Bacojo upset sixth-seed Samson Lim Jr. in huge upset at the first round.

Ukrainian GM stuns top seed, wins int'l chess fest in Subic

GRANDMASTER Vitaly Sivuk of Ukraine racked up his third straight win – and his biggest in the tournament – to emerge as the undisputed champion in the 2015 Philippine International Chess Championship after the 10th and final round Saturday at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel in Subic Bay Freeport.

Sivuk, the no. 11 seed, stunned top seed and erstwhile solo leader GM Abijheet Gupta of India after 42 moves of a Gruenfeld Defense to bring his total to seven points and take home the top prize of $5,000.

In all, the 23-year-old Ukranian tallied seven points on five wins, four draws and a loss, which came against GM Anton Demchenko of Russia in the 6th round.

Four other players – Demchenko, fellow GM Anton Shomoev, Chinese GM and 5th seed Shanglei Lu of China and GM Chakkravarthy Deepan of India had a chance to forge a tie for the overall lead but their games all ended in draw, with Lu splitting the point with Demchenko and Deepan settleing for a draw with Shomoev.

The four dropped into a seven-way tie with Gupta and final-round winners GM Narayanan Sinulduth Lyna of India and Russian GM Boris Savchenko with 6.5 points each.

Sinulduth Lyna, who had 5.5 points going into the final round, turned back Filipino GM Joey Antonio in 31 moves of an Anti-Nimzo Indian, while Savchenko defeated International Master Chen Lin of China after 36 moves of a Mieses Variation of the Scandinavian.

Lin and no. 3 seed GM Pavel Smirnov of Russia, who beat compatriot GM Vladimir Belous in 34 moves of a Benko Gambit Accepted, dropped into a two-way tie with six points each.

International Master Rolando Nolte and 17-year-old NM Jerad Docena, meanwhile, emerged as the top Filipino finishers in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Puregold, Asian United Bank and Burlington Socks. Marc Ventures Holdings, Inc. and Marc Ventures Mining and Development Corporation.

Nolte drew his final round against GM Eugene Torre after 21 moves of the Knights Variation of the Indian Game, while Docena outsteadied IM Abhimanyu Puranik of India in 67 moves of a King’s Indian Attack to end up with similar 5.5 points in tie with no. 2 seed GM Alexander Zubov of Ukraine and GM Mikhail Mozharov of Russia.

A half point behind is a large group of five-pointers composed of GM Vladimir Belous of Russia, GM Doc Hoa Nguyen of Vietnam, Torre, GM Joey Antonio, reigning national champion GM Richard Bitoon, IM Paulo Bersamina and GM Tigran Kotanjian of Armenia.

Woman International Master Janelle Mae Frayna duplicated her feat last year after emerging as the best Filipina female player after finishing with four points.

In the Challenger Division, WFM Shania Mae Mendoza and Lennon Hart Salgados ended up tied with seven points after nine rounds, but Mendoza earned the title via the tiebreak.

Mendoza downed Christopher Diaz in 33 moves of a Nimzowitsch Defense, while Salgados halved the point against Paul Robert Evangelista in a Slav Defense, Exchange variation.

The second tournament, PSC/PUREGOLD International Chess Challenge reels off Saturday, at the same venue.

Lin ties Gupta for lead, Nolte stuns GM in Round 5 of Subic chessfest

Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta of India defeated co-leader GM Anton Demchenko of Russia to grab solo lead after the fifth round of the Philippine International Chess Championships held at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel in Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Gupta, with a rating of 2633, went on to beat Demchenko (2592) in a seemingly drawish Sicilian game in 105 moves, Demchenko overlooked a saving move in time scramble and lost after a forced exchange of his Rook for a queening Pawn and a Bishop. Gupta has 4.5 points in 5 games of play.

In solo second with 4 points is International Master Lin Chen who upset Russian GM Vladimir Belous in 50 moves of an English Opening, Anglo-Slav variation. Six players followed him with 3.5 points: GM Demchenko, second seed GM Alexander Zubov of Ukraine, GM Vitaly Sivuk (Ukraine), GM Anton Shomoev (Russia), GM Lu Shanglei (China) and GM Chakkravarthy Deepan of India.

But the day belongs to International Master Rolando Nolte who upset GM Mikhail Mozharov of Russia in 50 moves of a Spanish Game (Ruy Lopez) and National Master Roel Abelgas who also upset International Master Sean Winshand Cuhendi of Indonesia in 47 moves of an Indian Game, Kingside Fianchetto. GM Joey Antonio drew his game with Battle of the Masters Champion GM Richard Bitoon in a Nimzo-Indian Defense Classical Variation. IM Nolte and NM Abelgas have 3 points while GM Antonio and GM Bitoon have 2.5.

In the Challenger division, four players are tied for the lead with 3.5 points after four rounds: Kevin Mirano, Jeth Romy Morado, Lennon Hart Salgados and WFM Shania Mae Mendoza. Mirano drew with WFM Mendoza in 37 moves of a French Defense, Salgados won against John Estrada Salcedo in 48 moves of a Pirc Defense Classical system and Morado demolished Paul Robert Evangelista also in a Classical Pirc in 26 moves. Below them with 3 points are Seniors champion Verth Alora, John Marvin Miciano, Ferdinand Aviles, Jan Francis Mirano and Christopher Diaz.

Russian, Indian GMs in three-way tie at Int'l Chess tilt in Subic

Three players remain unbeaten after the second round of the Philippine International Chess Championships held at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel in Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Russian grandmasters Anton Demchenko and Anton Shomoev and International Master Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan of India defeated their respective rivals to show the way in the second round of the tournament which has an averaged rating of 2434. Demchenko, one the champions in last year’s version of this twin events, stopped the Sicilian Scheveningen Keres Attack of Grandmaster Chakkravarthy Deepan of India in 60 moves while GM Shomoev beat our very own GM Eugene Torre in 79 moves of an Open Ruy Lopez as International Master Narayanan upset GM Lu Shanglei of China in 37 moves of a QGA.

The tournament is the first of two tournaments being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported financially by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) headed by its Chairman, the Honorable Ricardo R. Subic to host 2 big int’l chess tilts

BARELY two weeks after holding its national championship, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines this time goes international, as it hosts two international chess tournaments in the next two weeks at the Subic Bay Freeport.

First up is the Philippine International Chess Championship (Open and Challenger Divisions) which will be held starting Nov. 9 and will end Nov. 14.

This will be immediately followed by the Philippine Sports Commission-Puregold Chess Challenge (Open and Challenger Divisions) to be held Nov. 16 to 21.

Both tournaments will be held at the Subic Peninsular Hotel located inside the Freeport.

NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales said he expects at least 15 full-pledged grandmasters from Europe and Asia to join the tournament who will pit wits against local talents led by newly-minted national champion GM Richard Bitoon.

Based on the tentative list in the NCFP website, the foreign contingent will be bannered by GMs Ivan Popov Ivan of Russia (Elo 2661), Alexander Zubov of Ukraine (2630), Abhijeet Gupta of India (2629), Pavel Smirnov of Russia (2617) Lu Shanglei of China, Anton Demchenko of Russia, Mikhail Mozharov, Boris Savchenko, Vladimir Belous and Antoni Shomoev, all Russia, Chen Lin of China and Tigran Kotanjian of Armenia.

“This tournament will give our young players a chance to improve their game and their ratings as well. This will also give our national and international masters, both men and women, to achieve their goals of making it to the next level,” Gonzales said.

Aside from Bitoon, also expected to see action in the twin tournaments are National Chess Championship runner-up GM Joey Antonio, third placer IM Haridas Pascua, last year's champion and Asia's first GM Eugene Torre and fellow GMs Oliver Barbosa, Mark Paragua and John Paul Gomez and several up-and-coming players led by Fide Master Joseph Mari Turqueza and Jerad Docena, IM Paulo Bersamina, among others.

Ducay shines in 2015 Asian Paratriathlon

Sixto Ducay overcame a poor swim to claim second place in the competitive PT4 category in yesterday’s ASTC Asian Paratriathlon Championships 2015 that started and ended at the Sands of Triboa, Subic Bay Freeport.

Competing with a left arm impairment, the 47-year-old Ducay never lost his focus despite placing fifth out of six participants in the swim leg to spearhead the Philippines’ two silver and a bronze medal performance in this race organized by Triathlon Association of the Philippines and sanctioned by the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC), Asian Paralympic Committee and Philspada.

Andy Avellano took the second silver medal over compatriot Arnal Aba in the PT2 in this event sponsored by Subic Bay Metropolitan AuthorityTourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, ASTC, Asian Centre for Insulation Phil., Gatorade, Speedo, SM Cares, Canon and Standard Insurance.

Japan swept the gold medals in the six categories disputed at the 750m swim, 18K bike, 5K run.

A total of seven countries saw action with Hong Kong bagging a silver, Korea and Malaysia taking home a bronze each while Kyrgyzstan and Singapore did not win a medal.

Leading the Japanese invasion was Yokohama World Paratriathlon Championships fourth placer Keiichi Sato who emerged as the fastest paratriathletes with one hour, seven minutes, 20 seconds in PT4.

Other winners were Junpei Kimuna in PT1 (1:11:25), Kenshiro Nakayama in PT2 (1:24:26), Hikeki Uda in PT3 (1:12:15) and Ryu Nakazawa in PT5 (1:14:24) in the male and Atsuko Yamada in female PT5 (1:23:37).

Subic Asian paratriathlon slated August 16

Sixto Ducay, Godfrey Taberna, Arnel Aba, Andy Avellana, and the visually impaired twins Joshua and Jerome Nelmida of the Philippines are all set to engage with their foreign counterparts in their quest for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games as the ASTC Asian ParaTriathlon Championships (APC) 2015 fires off on Aug. 16 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

In the race sanctioned by Asian Paralympic Committee and Philspada, the Filipinos will challenge crack paratriathletes from Japan, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Hongkong and Korea in designated categories of competitions that will cover 750 meter swim – 18 km bike – 5 km run. Paratriathlon has categories of Tri1, Tri2, Tri3, Tri4, Tri5 and Tri6 for newcomers.

Race briefings will be held a day before the race for paratriathlon and sprint and mixed relay participants at the Subic Holiday Villas at 4 p.m. Race packets will be distributed all day at the lobby. Subic Bay Asian ParaTriathlon set

IN line with its mandate to develop high-caliber and more competitive national triathlon teams, the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) will be organizing the ASTC Asian ParaTriathlon Championships (APC) 2015 on August 16 at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as well as the Philippine National Triathlon Trials (NTT) in Iloilo City on August 22.

For the APC, a record field of around thirty participants from Japan, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea and the Philippines will engage in the competition for the much needed qualifying points for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. At the same time there will be a regular triathlon sprint distance races for elite (mixed relay) and age-groupers at Dungaree Beach in Subic Bay.

Betten leads Aussie sweep in Regent 5i50

SUBIC, Philippines – Australian Sam Betten struck gold on his second race in the Philippines, besting tough compatriots Mitch Kibby and Casey Munro for the coveted men’s pro crown of the inaugural Regent 5i50 Triahlon on an cloudy Sunday morning here.

The 6-foot-4 Betten stayed close to the pacesetters in the swim and bike phase then shifted to high gear in the concluding run to reach the finish line at Remy Field in 1:59:23.4.

Youthful Kibby placed No. 2 with 2:01:24 while Munro, who was out to nail his second 5i50 title in Subic, settled for third with 2:01:31.2. Clayton Fettell was fourth with 2:04:36.8 followed by Subic resident Michael Murphy (2:09:03.3).

“I finished second when I raced for the first time in the Philippines in Cebu Ironman 70.3 last year so I really wanted to go one better and try to go for a win today,” said Betten.

He came into the 1.5K swim, 40K bike,10K run race organized by Sunrise Events and backed by Regent Foods with a concrete plan and stuck with it.

“I swam conservatively and I rode with the boys who were riding really hard. Then on the run I just went for it, ran as hard as I could,” said Betten.

Kibby overtook two others to cop silver on his Phl debut.“I was alone in fourth (in the bike) and the strong three up front are gaining time on me. But I knew if I could maintain my own race, I could run well,” said the former football and cricket player.

Despite the overnight rains and the morning overcast, Munro found the heat too much. “It was really hot like last year. I got a pretty good group with Clayton (Fettel) and Sam. It was a hard race, an honest race, and the best person won.”

As motivated to emerge victorious was grizzled veteran Belinda Granger, who got her usual spot on the winners’ podium after posting 2:21:46.8 against younger rivals Dimity-Lee Duke of Australia (2:23:24.8) and local bet Monica Torres (2:25:07.2). Thai Carole Fuchs wound up fourth at 2:34.00.

Granger felt Subic was her turf, having won two previous 5i50 races here in 2012-13 before settling for bridesmaid to Caroline Steffen last year.

“It’s no secret that this has been my race. I won two years in a row and when Caroline came and I got second last time, I was a little bit peeved off. So it’s really nice to have a comeback this year and take the win (again),” said Granger.

She outran younger legs Duke and Torres.

“For the first time all year, I actually felt like I was racing in the run. That made the difference. I’ve been swimming and biking well all year but I don’t get the run down every single time. But today, I was happy to have a great run and I was able to hold off Dimity and Monica who also had a spectacular race,” said Granger.

Duke said she suffered bum stomach the past two days. “I really had to fight my way to the finish so I’m pretty happy I’ve come in second against one of my idols and one of the best women in the sport,” she said.

Torres, meanwhile, banked on her familiarity with her “home course” to land a podium finish.

“I live in Subic so I’m very familiar with the course and I’m happy to come in third for the pro women’s,” she said.

Alaska Tri Aspire’s Banjo Norte (2:07:56) and LC Langit (2:34:58) emerged as the top male and female Filipino elite competitors.

Yuya Oshima and Kasumi Ishikawa dominated the tables to lead the all-Japan winner’s circle in the singles tournaments at the conclusion of of the GAC Group International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Philippine Open on Sunday at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center.

Oshima – ranked 57th in the world and second in the bracket – blanked tournament top-rank and world no. 24 Jung Youngsik of South Korea in straight sets, 11-5, 11-7, 12-10, 11-9, to cop his first senior men’s singles title in the World Tour circuit.

In the semifinals of Sunday’s late morning session, Oshima made quick work of Chinese Taipei’s Wu Chih-Chi, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7, also in straight sets to complete his dominant outing on the tournament’s final day.

The two met each other in the qualifying rounds of the German Open last March, with the world ranked no. 24 South Korean booting out Oshima in a hotly contested match. With this weighing heavily in his head, the Japanese bet did not take this chance lightly and dominated the match from the get-go to claim the top prize.

“I played against him in Germany last March, so I made up my plan against Jung carefully in advance. So it’s a measure of revenge for me,” said Oshima. “I haven’t had good results for the past few months, so it is a great thing for me to achieve and win the title here. It will give me much more confidence.”

“I played very cool in my mind, and it helped me so much in winning the title,” he added.

The five men and women of the national table tennis team bound for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will showcase their wares against rivals from Asia and Europe in the 2015 GAC Group International Table Tennis Federation  World Tour Philippines Open that starts Wednesday (May 27) at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center.

Organized by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, the second edition of the five-day annual meet attracted 93 athletes, who will battle for the prize pool of $50,000.

In comparison to last year's edition, the tournament expanded its format to crown champions on the men's and women's open, men's and women's Under-21, and men's and women's doubles.

Matches will begin at 10 a.m. for the morning session, followed by the afternoon session beginning 2:30 p.m. for all days. Admission is free.

Regent 5150 triathlon fires off June 7

Regent Foods Corporation will host the 5150 Triathlon at the Subic Bay on June 7, Sunrise Events, the organizer of the race, announced on Wednesday at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.

Started in 2011 by the World Triathlon Corporation, The 5150 is a triathlon that consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10 kilometer run that sums up to a distance of 51.50 kilometers, hence the name. The first 5150 in the Philippines was held on June 2013 at the same venue and this year’s edition of the event is expected to attract 1,000 participants.

Professional triathletes from around the world have signed up for the foreign entries category including top Australian triathletes Casey Munro, Justin Granger and Clayton Fettell.

“Our aim with this event is to encourage even more people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and embrace multisport training and racing. While we recognize that people may have an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event as a ‘bucket list’ item, we also realize that you need to start somewhere and this event does exactly that,” said Sunrise Events President Wilfred Uytengsu.

The swimming segment—a rectangular clockwise swim would take place at the Subic Bay Boardwalk. The competitors would then engage in a 40-kilometer bike race from Subic International Airport going to IDESS, then up to Tarlac Road then back to Remington Field. The final part of the event would be the 10-kilometer run that would start and end at Remy Field, going through Rizal Highway, Dewey Avenue, and the Argonaut Highway.

Uytengsu also assured participants that they would see to it that the Subic Bay Boardwalk is safe for swimmers. The safety of the area became questionable the past years because of power plants located nearby.

“We have suspended swim, the last time I think was in 2008, because of the condition of the water coming from Olongapo. Since then it has been addressed by the new administration of the city of Olongapo,” said Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Director Raul Marcelo,

Canadian former ice hockey player is fastest man at Asian Triathlon Cup in Subic

A former ice hockey player from Canada was the fastest man in the 2015 ASTC Asian Triathlon Cup held at the Subic Freeport on Sunday.

Racing in the Philippines for the first time, Tyler Mislawchuk crossed the finish line in one hour 47 minutes and 56 seconds to rule the men’s standard elite race, 20 seconds ahead of Daniel Coleman of Australia who was just ahead of another Canadian, Alexis Lepage.

The 20-year-old Manitoba native swam through a school of jellyfish in the warm waters off Malawaan then built a huge gap in the bike stage - enough to hold off his closest pursuers with a blazing finish in the last two kilometers.

“The run part was the most difficult. I struggled through the first half with stomach pains – I might have taken too much liquids during the bike—but I was able to get my breathing down and digest a bit and was able to get back in the second half,” said Milawchuk, whose runner’s build of 1.7 meters and 125 lbs prompted him to shift from competitive hockey to triathlon four years ago.

Japan’s Chika Sato retained her women’s elite title with a time of 2:26:30 despite being stung by a jellyfish on her left leg in the swim course. Taking the silver medal was Hideko Kikuchi while Australia’s Laura Dennis earned the bronze.

The 29-year old-Sato came second out of the water and managed to maintain her positioning in the bike part before making a move in the run portion by using her knowledge of Subic’s streets and corners.

Olongapo’s John Leerams Chicano and recently arrived Fil-Am Kim Kilgroe led the Filipino effort in the absence of several members of the national team who are currently training overseas for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games.

Young Pinoy triathletes shine in Subic

Brent Velalo led a 1-2-3 finish in the male 13 to 15 years old even as their female counterparts took two more medals on the day of the young triathletes who gave host Philippines a good start in the 2015 ASTC Asian Triathlon Cup yesterday at the Malawaan Park inside Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Hong Kong triathletes also made their presence felt by sweeping the male and female Junior Elite titles in this event organized by Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) in cooperation with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and sanctioned by the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) and International Triathlon Union (ITU).

Valelo, 14, negotiated the 400m swim, 12km swim and 3km mini-sprint distance in 46 minutes flat as he defeated compatriots Fredric Albert “Yuan” Chiongbian (46:12) and Bambam Manglicmot (47:10) for the gold medal.

A total of 20 triathletes saw action in the male division that included two Malaysians, and Valelo’s victory over Chiongbian ended strings of defeats he suffered to the Cebuano triathlete.

Chiongbian first two wins came in the 2013 Subic Bay-Asian Triathlon Championship and in last year’s Batang Pinoy Finals.

“I’m happy because I was really determined to get back at him. I did very well from start to finish although I really need to put more effort in the swim,” said Valelo who won despite finishing sixth in the swim leg.

He made his move in the bike race as he and Chiongbian formed the lead pack heading into the run leg. Velalo however had more gas left in his tank as he slowly pulled away in the final kilometer for a solo finish.

Batang Pinoy champion Nicole Eijansantos (50:09) and Sam McInnes (51:39) settled for the silver and bronze medals in the girls division that was ruled by Bailee Brianna Brown from Hong Kong (48:52).

Yu Hang Kok, meanwhile, won his first gold medal after three trips in the country as he joined Camden Ritcher who successfully retained her title in the Junior Elite in this event.

The race set at the sprint distance (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) and Yu timed at 56:54 to edged compatriots Michael Lam (56:55) and
Oscar Coggins (57:49).

Richter clocked at 1:05:38 to win over teammate Cheuk Yi Hung (1:06:55) and Yu Yan Huang from Chinese Taipei (1:07:27).

Edward Jared Macalalad and YOG representative Vicky Deldio emerged the best placed local triathletes in this category with a fifth and fourth place . (The Daily Tribune)

Developing young sailors in Subic

Sixteen young sailors, ages nine to 15, participated in the dinghies competition (optimist class) during the just concluded eighth Commodores’ Cup Regatta organized by the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) Club, in cooperation with The Lighthouse Marina Resort and Philippine Sailing Association (PSA) in Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The young sailors, mostly from Cavite and Parañaque City, were trained in Manila for three months under PSA sailing coach Medy Fidel.

This summer, the training program will be expanded in Subic Bay wherein prospective sailors will come from Olongapo City and nearby towns of Zambales.

Hong Kong’s Frank Pong, Asia’s top sailor and Asian Yachting Grand Prix Skipper of the Year, is one of the leading supporters of sailing in the Philippines. Pong’s crews are mostly Filipinos coming from Cebu, Bacolod and Manila. They have been sailing and competing for more than 20 years.

8th Commodores’ Cup Regatta up in Subic

The Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) Club will hold the eighth Commodores’ Cup Regatta on April 7-9 with a strong field expected to vie for top honors in Subic Bay.

Hong Kong’s IRC Racing defending champion Jelik of Frank Pong and IRC Cruiser B winner Selma skippered by Ricky Sandoval will head the cast in the event held in cooperation with The Lighthouse Marina Resort and Philippine Sailing Association, according to PSA vice chair Jun Avecilla.

IRC Cruiser A champion Red Kite II skippered by Anthony Root, however, will not participate this year.

Since 1962, international yachtsmen and women have pitted themselves against the cold rough seas off Hong Kong and the sun-drenched slope of the windless days off the Philippine coast.

This year, the race from Hong Kong will end up in San Fernando, La Union (480 nautical miles).

Avecilla said the Commodores’ Cup will feature several races of different kinds of training boats, including the Optimists, Flying 15, 420s and Streakers.

“Blessed with one of the best race management teams in Asia, safe marina facilities and the wide expanse of Subic Bay, the Commodore’s Cup Regatta makes for an exceptional racing experience,” Avecilla said.

He added that this year marks the expansion of the PSA sailing program in Subic Bay which is spearheaded by Judes Echauz, PSA chairman.

PSA sailing coach Medy Fidel, who is aiming for Olympic qualifier, will be the head of the expansion training this summer.

Filipinos have always been considered as one of the best sailors in the world. Pong’s crews are mostly Filipinos coming from Cebu, Bacolod and Manila. They have been sailing and competing for more than 20 years.

Pong, Asia’s top sailor and Asian Yachting Grand Prix Skipper of the Year, is one of the leading supporters of sailing in the Philippines. His donation of new sails for the training boats of the SAGS Sailing School in partnership with the PSA has helped jumpstart the sailing program in Subic.

“Whenever I can, we help out here and there. Oftentimes, youngsters have a limited budget and the people helping them also needs assistance,” said Pong.

The inshore races from Hong Kong to San Fernando are organized by the Saturday SAGS Club, in conjunction with the Asian Yachting Grand Prix in cooperation with The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Watercraft Ventures, Inc., Standard Insurance and the Department of Tourism. (The Philippine Star)

Elite bets coming for Subic race

FOREIGN triathletes seeking qualifying points for the ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup series and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics are set to figure in a battle royale in the 2-day 2015 Subic Bay ASTC Asian Triathlon Cup 2015 co-presented by Speedo on April 25-26 at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Eight elite entries from Japan, three from Macau and about 40 triathletes from Australia, Uzbekistan, Iran, Hong Kong, Syria, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Singapore and Canada are competing in the event.

Among the foreign pros to watch out for is Australian Kelly Perkins who is coming off an impressive performance in the Maloobala Oceania Cup last March 14. He will be challenged by triathletes from Japan and John Chicano, who will lead the Philippine team.

Outstanding Philippine age-grouper Kim Kilgroe and Zoe Bowden, Malaysia’s back-to-back 13-15 category champion, will make their debut in the elite ranks of the distaff side backed by Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Tourism Department, Philippine Sports Commission, Standard Insurance, and the Lighthouse Marina Resort, among others.

Under the mechanics of the event organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines in cooperation with the SBMA, Asian Triathlon Confederation and the International Triathlon Union, top local and international elite athletes will get ITU points for Asian and world rankings and qualification to major international competitions.

The elite junior (ages 16-19) competition will feature Briton Sam O’Shea and American Kyle Izzo who will be tested by Philippine athletes led by Edward Macalalad, Julius Constantino, Justin Chiongbian and Jimuel Patilan. (Malaya Business Insight)
