Close to 400 Subic Bay Freeport and Olongapo City stakeholders joined the Pink Run 2022 to show support to breast cancer awareness, which happened last October 21, Friday.

Dubbed as “The Pink Run 2022–D’Feeting Breast Cancer,” the event was organized by the Philippine Society of General Surgeons (PSGS)-Central Luzon Chapter, the Olongapo City Medical Society (OCMS), Philippine College of Occupational Medicine (PCOM), and the Subic-Olongapo Cancer Foundation (SOCFI) in collaboration with the SBMA Gender and Development.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) GAD Focal Point System (GFPS) Executive Committee Head Amethya Dela Llana was hands-on in welcoming the organizers, participants and event partners on behalf of the SBMA Chairman and Administrator Rolen C. Paulino.

“On behalf of Chairman Paulino, we would like to thank the organizers and participants for having the breast cancer awareness activity here. And we have agreed that from here on out, the breast cancer awareness event will be hosted here in the Subic Bay Freeport.  This said signature project will be included in the Tourism and GAD calendars annually,” Dela Llana announced.

Men and women participants in the Pink Run 2022 either wore pink shirts, pink bandanas, pink face masks, pink caps, pink pants, or pink shoes. They represented various Freeport locators such as Lindberg, Sanyo Denki Philippines, Wistron Infocomm Philippines, Nidec Subic Philippines Corporation, Brookes Aesthetic and Wellness Center, and Victory Gym. SBMA employees and Subic Bay Multipurpose Cooperative members also joined.

He added that before pandemic, it was celebrated with a unity walk then forming a human pink ribbon.

“So now that we are coming back to the new normal, playing safe. But we are trying to ease back the activities that we used to do. So this year, after a two-year absence, we are back,” Dr. Manzo said.

He reminded that October is breast cancer awareness month, and that the Pink Run 2022 brought them all together to celebrate breast cancer patients, cancer survivors, and all womenfolk suffering from the big C, because women are more prone to breast cancer.

“But truth be told nowadays, cancer is beatable. We can prevent cancer with early screening,” he assured.

Hosted by DJ Tommy G of 89.5 Subic Bay radio and Dr. Karl Edejer, a pain management specialist, the program was highlighted by the warm-up stretching led by Victory Gym coaches.

Meanwhile, the coaches and athletes of Crossfit Olongapo City spearheaded the first wave of runners, leading the participants around the Remy Field oval track.

Capping the event was the iconic forming of the human pink ribbon.

In other parts of the country, Pink Run 2022 was also celebrated in Bacolod, General Santos City and Dasmariñas, Cavite with a lap run.

In Bohol, a non-profit organization launched a long distance run in various distances as a fund-raising campaign for the benefit of breast cancer patients and other indigent beneficiaries. Participants were given the choice to run in 3, 5, 10 and 16 kilometers.

Michelle Apilado and Marlon Ebba of the SBMA Finance group (left photo), and John dela Cruz with teammate Paola Maria Santillan of the SBMA Regulatory group (right photo) present their entry to the judges during the SBMA GAD Women’s Month Ultimate Cook-off competition.

Representatives from the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Finance group and Regulatory group were declared winners of the agency’s Women’s Month Ultimate Cook-off Competition.

Dubbed as “Juana, laban sa pandemya. Kaya!,” this year’s Women’s Month festivities, concluded the month-long celebration of women empowerment with an ultimate cook-off challenge.

“For this year’s cook-off challenge, we have two categories—the ‘Bahay Kubo challenge’ and the Fruit Carving competition,” DJ Jepsz Eslava, SBMA Gender and Development (GAD) coordinator said.

He explained that for the ‘Bahay Kubo’ challenge, the representatives were provided with all the vegetables mentioned in the song ‘Bahay Kubo,’ except for the seasonal vegetables.

The Fruit Carving competition, Eslava added, is a new activity incorporated to the cook-off challenge, where representatives were given a watermelon, oranges, apples, and bell peppers to work on.

Eslava also said that the cook-off challenge, a tandem of men and women were required to represent each Strategic Business Unit (SBU). This, he said, was to signify that women’s month not only involves women, but men also, under a “shared responsibility.”

Winning P10,000 cash were Michelle Apilado of the Finance group for the ‘Bahay Kubo challenge,’ and John Dela Cruz of the Regulatory group for the Fruit Carving competition.

Other representatives who joined the Ultimate Cook-off challenge were: Maregil L. Soriano and Arturo E. Tacuyan of the Administration group; Ramwel Josefe Ramos and Almira C. Bautista of the Business and Investment group; Avlean Rica Torralba and June Calma of the Operations group; Aida Gorospe and Antonio dela Cruz of the Public Services group; Michelle Dolores and Rodante Tungol of the Legal Affairs group; Ryan Joseph Garcia and Fleurdelis Valino Cruz of the Chairman and Administrator’s group; Cheryl Mae L. Canlas and Nelson Nelgas of the Tourism group; and Mary Jane A. Delgado and Jesus P. Payumo of the Municipal Services group.

Representatives of each SBU were given P5,000 just for making it to the final list of cook-off participants.

Meanwhile, SBMA chairman and administrator Rolen C. Paulino expressed his admiration towards women.

“If I were to die and given a chance to live again, I would still choose to be a man. Because I know how hard it is to be a woman—to take care of their loved ones, to do all the household chores, and still even handle day jobs. So I honor the women for doing such a wonderful job,” Paulino said. (MPD-SBMA)

Subic Freeport holds first Pride Parade

More than a hundred participants from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community joined in the first Pride Parade here in the Subic Bay Freeport on Sunday to help promote equality, diversity and inclusion among various sexes.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma and Bataan Representative Geraldine Roman, the first transgender woman elected to the Congress of the Philippines, led the parade to show support to the LGBT community.

The parade featured LGBT members in colorful costumes, who competed in a contest that sought to express and affirm the culture and pride of the LGBT community.

LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity and equality rights, as well as to increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

SBMA Chairman Eisma said the Subic agency firmly supports the LGBT community’s demand for equality and equal rights regardless of religion, color, or sexual preference.

Delegates to the event included members from LGBT Barretto in Olongapo City, which had the biggest number of participants; The Antonio’s Family of San Felipe; The Antonio’s Family of San Narciso; Bi Alliance of Bataan, Olongapo and Iba; Proud Gays of Olongapo; The Montero Sisters; and The Smith Sisters.

In an interview during the event, Rep. Roman said she is proud that the Anti-Discrimination Law has been passed in the Lower House via unanimous decision, and that the bill will be passed on to the Senate for review.

“So, it’s up to Senator Risa Hontiveros (to work for) the enactment of the bill,” she added.

Roman also said that House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is pushing for civil partnership for all genders. She explained that this is different from the same-sex marriage that the LGBT Party Ladlad is pushing for. The civil partnership act will cover all genders, not just the LGBT community.

Roman said that the Anti-Discrimination bill will punish anybody who discriminates or make derogatory remarks against any LGBT person. The violator will be jailed for five years and fined P20,000.

Meanwhile, Chairman Eisma expressed hope that the Pride Parade will be bigger the next time around, as she reiterated the full support of the SBMA to gender equality, anti-discrimination, and human rights.

The event was organized by a group headed by Gigs Estalilla, who is an officer of the SBMA Gender and Development Focal Point Committee.

SBMA launches GAD komiks, radio program

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), through its Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System, has intensified its involvement in the promotion of gender equality in the workplace and the local community.

In a simple program during the flag-raising ceremony on Monday, SBMA Chairman Roberto Garcia and GAD chairperson Amethya Koval announced the release of a comics-magazine called “Juana” that promotes the rights of women and children, and the start of the radio program “Gender Hour,” which tackles topics on gender equality.

Garcia, who is also a GAD champion, lauded the officers and personnel behind the GAD projects for their initiative to promote social awareness and to make the SBMA an active participant in the program.

“GAD focuses on the principle that development is for all,” Garcia stressed. “Whatever the gender is, everyone has the right to equal opportunities to achieve a full and satisfying life, and I’m glad that the SBMA is in the forefront of this advocacy.”

Koval said that “Juana,” a 28-page full color komiks, explains existing laws, such as Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women, which promotes equal rights in all aspects related to marriage and family relationships.

The publication also tackles RA 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004) and RA 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination), as well as RA 7877 (Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995) and RA 9995 (Anti-Photo and Voyeurism Act), which protects and guarantees dignity and privacy of everyone and full respect for human rights.

The magazine, Koval said, will be distributed free to offices of business locators and investors, schools and other local government units in the Subic Freeport.

Copies were also given to Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (AVAWC) representatives from Olongapo City and the Subic Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce.

After the announcement, SBMA GAD officials launched over SBMA radio station Subic Bay FM (89.5 MHZ) the radio program “Gender Hour,” to promote awareness on gender equality, including issues on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT); and sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE).

Koval said that the one-hour interactive radio program will be aired every Monday at 10:00 in the morning. The program is broadcast live and reaches the whole of Central Luzon and abroad via internet streaming.

Koval added that during the soft launch of the radio program, “Gender Hour” had gained listeners and audiences in parts of United States, Japan, Dubai, and other parts of the Middle East.

“We are glad that our program is reaching broader audiences domestically and abroad. This only shows that we are on the right track in promoting awareness of gender equality,” she also said.

Koval also announced that the SBMA GAD is preparing a regular magazine, with writers and contributors from the SBMA and Freeport companies and schools, in order to reach more audiences in the Subic Bay Freeport area. (RAV/MPD-SBMA)

SBMA, RP Energy partners for Women's Month

More than 300 employees of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), locators, and community partners marched in the Freeport to advocate for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.

With the theme “Pledge for Equality,” the activity was a partnership between SBMA – Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System and Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc. (RP Energy) to raise awareness on the role of women in nation-building through various activities.

One of the highlights of the program was the women empowerment walk, wherein SBMA showcased the different facets of women in the Freeport. Local women advocates and movers participated in this activity.

Benefitting over 200 SBMA employees was the “KliniKaBabaihan” program, which involved a medical mission to promote women’s health and wellness. The activity covered free dental check-ups; random blood sugar and pressure testing; and distribution of reading glasses to SBMA employees, which are mostly women.

Regular community consultations led by RP Energy were used as a basis for these corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.

“During our field work, we noticed that there’s a lack of equal opportunity for women especially in grassroot communities. Because of this, we at RP Energy started crafting gender-responsive CSR initiatives to address this issue,” said RP Energy Head for External Affairs Victor Chan.

Among the gender-sensitive CSR programs of RP Energy, which it has been conducting since 2012, are KliniKababaihan and Usapang Babae.

To date, RP Energy has covered 200 trafficked persons which were oriented on their rights under the law and were informed on the available Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) services and programs.

The power company also established three Women’s Health and Wellness Center located in Barangay Cawag, Subic Municipality and Pastolan Aeta Village. And to ensure the physical and psychological health of women in the grassroot communities, they have trained more than 200 women Barangay Health Workers, enabling them to bring health services to women in far-flung areas.

The celebration of Women’s Month in the Philippines traces its history back in 1988 when, President Corazon C. Aquino signed Proclamation No. 224 “Declaring the First Week of March of Every Year as Women’s Week and March 8, 1988 and Every Year Thereafter as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day.”

On that same year, Ms. Aquino also signed Proclamation No. 227, “Providing for the Observance of the Month of March as Women’s Role in History Month,” which designated the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW which is now Philippine Commission on Women or PCW) as the secretariat to coordinate its nationwide observance.

On 10 April 1990, she signed Republic Act No. 6949, “An Act to Declare March Eight of Every Year as a Special Working Holiday to be Known as National Women’s Day,” to encourage employees from the government and private sector to participate in Women's Day activities.

The celebration has become an occasion for discussions on various gender-related issues, with activities such as Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015), the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025), and the Framework Plan for Women.
