HD Hyundai launches first Subic-built ship, marks return of large-scale shipbuilding

South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Philippines (HHIP) has launched its first vessel built in Subic, marking a major milestone in the revival of large-scale shipbuilding at the former Hanjin shipyard.

The Orion Jade, a 115,000-ton crude oil and product tanker, was launched on July 28 at the Agila Subic Shipyard in Redondo Peninsula, less than a year after HD Hyundai formally began shipbuilding operations at the sprawling facility.

Measuring 250 meters long, 42 meters wide and 21 meters deep, the vessel is the first ship fully constructed by HHIP at the Subic facility and signals the Korean shipbuilder's push to establish Subic as a major manufacturing base in Southeast Asia.

The vessel is also the first of four ships ordered by an Asia-based shipping company, with construction of the program beginning following the steel-cutting ceremony in September 2025.

HHIP President Im Dae Jun described the launch as a historic milestone for the company as it ramps up operations at the Subic shipyard.

The launching was witnessed by Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go, Republic of Korea Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno, Botolan Mayor Jun Omar Ebdane and Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr., among other government and industry officials.

Go said the completion of the Orion Jade demonstrated how foreign investment commitments could translate into actual industrial projects, jobs and expanded manufacturing capability.

“The Orion Jade launch is a testament to our commitment to delivering projects that create quality jobs, enhance industrial capacity, and generate meaningful economic opportunities for Filipinos,” Go said.

Aliño, meanwhile, said the project reflected growing investor confidence in the Subic Bay Freeport and cited incentives provided under the CREATE MORE Law, or Republic Act No. 12066, as among the factors helping attract major investments.

The launch also represents a significant turnaround for the massive Subic shipbuilding facility, which is now being brought back into large-scale vessel production under HD Hyundai.

At the heart of the facility is a 550-meter dry dock, the largest in the Philippines, which will enable HHIP to build at least 10 ships annually beginning next year, according to SBMA.

Korean Ambassador Lee said the Filipino-built vessel also symbolized the expanding maritime and industrial partnership between South Korea and the Philippines.

“Maritime cooperation between our countries continues to grow, further strengthening mutual trust and sharing a promising future,” Lee said.

The project has already generated around 4,000 jobs, with HHIP planning to further expand its workforce as shipbuilding operations increase. The company has also partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to develop training programs aimed at supplying skilled workers for the growing shipyard operations.

The Orion Jade's completion places Subic once again on the map of large-scale commercial shipbuilding, years after shipbuilding operations at the former Hanjin facility ceased.

For Subic, the launch marks not simply the completion of another vessel, but the return of an industry that had once made the Freeport one of the country's major shipbuilding centers. (SNL)

SBMA pioneers in workplace reintegration of parolees, probationers

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Parole and Probation Administration (PPA), an attached agency under the Department of Justice (DoJ), recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that supports the reintegration of probationers, parolees, and pardonees into the workplace.

The MOA was signed between SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño and Department of Justice-Parole and Probation Administration (DOJ-PPA) Administrator Atty. Bienvenido O. Benitez Jr. on Thursday, at the SBMA Corporate Boardroom.

According to Aliño, the workplace reintegration program is a silver lining for those who were deprived of liberty and be part of the social mainstream again.

“If you are a parolee, probationer or pardonee, people will tend to look down on you because of the social stigma from your past actions.  I honestly think though, that they should not be denied their right to work and provide financial support to their families,” he said.

He added that this stigma has hindered most of them from reintegrating into a workplace, as they are usually shunned by companies due to their past records.

Atty. Benitez expressed his gratitude to the SBMA for supporting the PPA’s workplace reintegration program since the agency is the first among the government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) that supported the project.

He lauded the efforts of the SBMA Labor Department led by Atty. Melvin Varias, for being instrumental in the realization of this proposal to reintegrate the parolees, probationers and pardonees (also known as clients) into the workplace,  to create employment opportunities and help rebuild the lives of former persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

According to the general conditions of the agreement, the SBMA and the PPA will jointly develop a workplace reintegration program for these clients that specifies its objectives and includes a register of the knowledge, skills, and competencies that these persons already have or acquired for skills-matching.

The SBMA and the DOJ-PPA will jointly monitor and evaluate the Workplace Reintegration Program.

The agreement also states that the supposed employment shall not constitute an employee-employer relationship between the SBMA and the clients, but shall be a partnership or joint venture between the agency and the DOJ-PPA, even beyond the scope of the agreement.

As the MOA also provides, the clients shall be personally responsible for any and all liabilities, injury to his/ herself or to property/ies or persons attributable to his/ her own fault or negligence while in the employ of employer establishment.

Meanwhile, SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator for Support Services Atty. Ramon O. Agregado said that the SBMA is more than willing to help these clients get back into the workplace, adding that providing equal employment opportunities for them would be an honorable undertaking for the agency.

“For our part, we will facilitate the endorsement of potential and qualified clients through a Register of Eligibles (ROEs) to Subic Bay Freeport Zone locator-companies under the Workplace Reintegration Program,” he said.

He added that the SBMA will provide a quarterly update to the DOJ-PPA on the program, and coordinate and work closely with the administration in order to provide the needed support to achieve the MOA's objectives.

First - ever hybrid workspace in Zambales opened

The first-ever hybrid workspace in Zambales has opened at the Pacific Ace Building in this premiere freeport on Thursday. 

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Jonathan D. Tan, International Workplace Group (IWG) Country Manager Lars B. Wittig and Pacific Ace Subic Bay Corporation (PASBC) President Virginia S. Dio led the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Regus Subic center at the Pacific Ace Building.

The Regus Subic center is the first-ever hybrid workspace in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. It is located at the second floor of The Gardens by Pacific Ace.

Tan said that the establishment of shared workspace inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone would entice more companies to locate here while initially testing the waters before going full-scale. “This shared workspace provides investors a platform for exploratory activities before deciding on whether they will be expanding to a bigger facility or undertake something else,” he said.

The Agency chief also lauded the efforts of IWG and Pacific Ace in establishing this virtual platform while incorporating the “green advocacy” of PASBC President Dio. 

“This will help startup companies to grow as the Regus Subic center shared workspace becomes an incubator that provides them an area to grow and develop before investing heavily in Subic Bay Freeport,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pacific Ace President Dio said that the shared workplace consists of co-working desks, meeting rooms, and private offices. She added that the Green Building is environmentally responsible to lessen the negative impact of our footprint to the environment.

“We provide a superior indoor environment that can enhance air and water quality to improve health, productivity, and the energy of the people in the premises. Such conditions are certainly conducive not only to its users but more importantly, to the environment,” she said.

SBMA hosts the Guinness World Record for the Largest Car Horn Ensemble

An ensemble of 1,077 Ford Everest sports utility vehicles (SUVs) made its way to the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA) over the weekend in a convoy to highlight an important milestone.

Ford Everest Club Philippines (FECP), a mid-size SUV club with 15,000 active members and one of the largest and most active car clubs in the country, succeeded in its attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Car Horn Ensemble.”

“Today, Ford Everest Club Philippines not only created an awe-inspiring symphony of horns, but also brought excitement along with the unique experience that came with it. I am thrilled and delighted to have witnessed and become a part of this event,” said Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman and Administrator Jonathan D. Tan during the awarding ceremony at the SBIA tarmac.

An estimated crowd of 5,000 club members, their families, organizers, sponsors and spectators took part in the event, visitor arrivals peaked before, during, and after the event.

Tan also shared that the attempt kicked off at the New Clark City Aquatics Center where the 1,077 Ford Everest SUVs simultaneously blew their horns to the tune of "Philippine Jeepney/Let's Go" for a duration of one minute and six seconds, before heading off to Subic Bay Freeport where the certificate was awarded to the FECP by the Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator.

SBMA, SBF locators help adults w/ special needs face independence in the real world

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) ventured in yet another first-of-its-kind partnership, to support the workplace immersion program for adults with special needs of students from the Vanguard Academy.

SBMA officials led by Labor department manager Atty. Melvin Varias, together with Le Charmé Suites chief executive officer Josephine Pellicer and Meat Plus Café Group operations manager Eizon Wilmar Sampang, welcomed 11 students of the Vanguard Academy (VA) in a send-off ceremony last July 2, 2022.

“On behalf of our chairman and administrator Rolen C. Paulino, and our Senior Deputy Administrator for Support Services Atty. Ramon Agregado, I would like to congratulate the Vanguard Academy for making this possible here in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone,” remarked Atty. Varias.

“This pilot immersion program is somehow noble to us because it involves students with special talents. This is unique to us. I hope that this multipartite partnership will be sustained even in the coming years because we believe that we can help prepare them for possible gainful employment in the future,” he added.

The Vanguard Academy, a special education institution in Makati City, Metro Manila, has collaborated with the SBMA Labor department to send off 11 young adults with special needs to selected SBMA departments and Freeport locators where they will work as on-the-job trainees (OJTs).

Five of them were assigned to SBMA departments (three for Tourism and two for Law Enforcement), four to Le Charmé Suites (two each for the cafeteria and hotel front desk), and two to Meat Plus Café.

In 2021, the VA launched the Workplace Immersion Program (WIP) on an online platform due to the pandemic. Students completed the program with the school’s partnerships with Viva Entertainment, Ayala Foundation and Bonifacio Art Foundation, where the OJT work focused more on the visual arts skills of the students.

The Academy is also taking it up a notch this year by piloting WIP on a face-to-face platform allowing them to work on-site but with guidance by job coaches from the academy.

One of their goals is for their students to have assisted or fully independent part- or full-time employment in small or large businesses by empowering individuals of all abilities, regardless of age, diagnosis whether typical or special that they may eventually be able to contribute to and be part of the society.

A few weeks back, the VA’s job coaches conducted an orientation session with its WIP partners on the basics of handling adults with special needs. Then, proceeded to assisting the students as they undergo the formality of a job interview by their respective employers, and a tour of the facility the students will be working in.

Jean Patricio, Vanguard Academy director for Academics, Employment and Independent Living Skills said that they always use the term “all abilities” to refer to different levels of abilities, whether typically developing, or individuals with autism, individuals with Down’s Syndrome, individuals with intellectual disability, or individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and so on.

“We are using WITH—with autism, with Down’s syndrome and not their actual names like autism, Down’s syndrome. It’s always WITH because we want to highlight that those diagnoses are just a part of them and not who they are. These individuals are more than their diagnosis,” she added.

During the opening program and send-off ceremony, the SBMA, Le Charmé Suites, Meat Plus Café, and Vanguard Academy officials sealed the agreement to formally commence the implementation of the two-week WIP of 11 adults with special needs.

Students, parents, job coaches and even partner establishments were anxious about the implementation of the program because these adults with special needs will be away from their comfort zone for two weeks.

However, one parent, Roy Ebora, father of three student participants namely, Kyle Kurt and John, said that the WIP is very well appreciated.

“From my perspective, this kind of program brings hope to parents like me that they will learn life skills. To people who are not in the normal spectrum, as development psychologists call it, having life skills is actually not that simple. And as we know, society in general, can be a little bit harsh to people who are not part of the normal group,” Ebora explained citing that one of his fears is if his children would be able to integrate themselves to society when they are gone.

Meanwhile, SBMA chairman and administrator Rolen Paulino expressed elation about having adults with special needs completing their training here in the SBF.

“This is great! Aside from the regular individuals we have in our workforce, we have “differently abled” individuals in our workforce. Now, we have trainees with special needs. I look forward to having them as workers sometime soon,” Paulino said.

Paulino also mentioned that in Subic Bay Freeport welcomes workers of all kinds of groups, including members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer community. With that, he reiterated the call to potential investors who want to make it happen in the Philippines to invest in Subic. (MPD-SBMA)

PN’s first missile-capable warship arrives in Subic

The Philippine Navy greatly boosted its current fleet with the low-key arrival of its first missile capable frigate, to be named BRP Jose Rizal (FF150), in Subic, Zambales, on Saturday.

From a five-day maiden voyage in Ulsan, South Korea, the frigate was accorded the traditional passing honors with BRP Andres Bonifacio (PS17) and three multipurpose assault craft (MPACs).

The event was documented during a fly-by of two anti-submarine helicopters, the Agusta Westland (AW) 159, and AW109. Prior to this, a meeting procedure was held between the frigate and BRP Andres Bonifacio with AW109 in the vicinity of Sta. Cruz, Zambales, before it was finally escorted to its designated anchorage area.

While at anchor, the sailing crew will undergo two-week quarantine in adherence to strict health protocols to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID19). The Technical Inspection and Acceptance of the frigate will commence after the quarantine period.

Breakthrough in Navy’s transformation 

The arrival of the country’s first missile-capable frigate is a “testament” to the government’s resolve to modernize the military as well as a “breakthrough” in the Philippine Navy’s transformation journey, Malacañang said.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque affirmed that the government remains committed in building a strong and credible maritime force to protect the country’s seas from threats.

The 2,600-ton ship, named after the country’s national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, is the latest addition in the Philippine Navy’s fleet that can fire guided missiles and torpedoes.

“We are pleased to announce the historic arrival to the Philippines of BRP Jose Rizal, our country’s first ever guided-missile frigate. The arrival of the country’s most advanced warship, delivered during this administration, is a testament to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s commitment to modernize our armed forces,” Roque said.

“This forms part of the national leadership’s initiative to enhance the country’s defense capabilities to secure our seas against current threats,” he added.

Roque said they consider the arival of the new ship “a breakthrough in the Philippine Navy’s transformation journey in our goal of building a strong and credible maritime force.”

BRP Jose Rizal 

The frigate will tentatively be commissioned into service on June 19, Rizal’s birthday. The 351 by 46-feet warship weighs 2,600 tons.

It is capable of “fighting the four dimensions of warfare” namely anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and electronic warfare (EW) operations, and is equipped with surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, torpedoes, and launchers.

It will also be equipped with a Hanwha Systems’ Naval Shield combat management system (CMS), regarded as the “brain” of military warship, which integrates all shipboard sensors and weapons.

This means that the ships will be able to detect and track air, surface and sub-surface targets. The same type of CMS was used by the Korean, Malaysian and Indonesian navies.

The frigate is the lead ship of its class and was built together with its sister ship, BRP Antonio Luna (FF151), which is set to be delivered in September this year The two missile frigates are part of an ₱18-billion contract between the Philippines and South Korea through shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in October 2016.

Taiwanese firm to develop P15-B techno-eco park in Subic Freeport

The first eco-friendly industrial park will be up soon in this free port to house light industrial factories, commercial facilities, residential buildings, and a nature park.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma said the project to be called the Tipo Hightech Eco Park (THEP) will be located in a 200-hectare property atop the gently rolling hills of Tipo, which is also the site of an expressway leading to this free port.

Eisma said the development will be undertaken by Xantheng Subic International Corp., a Taiwanese company which committed an investment of P15 billion for the project. The firm is also behind the development of a high-end condominium complex at Triboa Bay here.

According to THEP Project Manager Jeff Lin, Xantheng Subic’s project will generate a workforce demand of over 500 during the development period alone. More employees will be hired when factories and business start operating, he added.

Meanwhile, the project is also expected to deliver to the SBMA some P5 million monthly in land rentals alone.

During the launch of the THEP project held at Peninsular Hotel here last week, Chairman Eisma elicited a promise from the investors to give priority hiring to qualified upland farmers of Tipo and Mabiga villages, who were part of a “social fencing” project of the SBMA which started in 2002. The 136.59 hectares they occupied under the SBMA program will be part of the THEP.

“I want you to promise me that when the factories and business are up, you will give priority to hiring these families or their children,” Eisma said, referring to the 65 families who were part of the social fencing program.

The SBMA official also thanked the farmers for their cooperation, and for allowing a very smooth and pleasant negotiation and turn-over.

Lin said the THEP was conceived to accommodate the growing population of Taiwanese investors in the Subic Bay Freeport. However, the management does not discount giving room for other nationalities, he said.

“The business atmosphere in here is very conducive and attractive, especially with the on-going road and infrastructure projects of the SBMA. Many Taiwanese companies and investors from other countries, too, are interested to locate here,” Lin said.

According to the master plan submitted by THEP to SBMA, the development will include 101.47 hectares for light industries, 17.99 hectares for a commercial complex, 7.11 hectares for mixed use, 23.16 hectares for residential buildings, and 23.16 for a nature and environment conservation park.

There will also be a reserved area for utilities use and other purposes for a total development area of 209.27 hectares.

Eisma also congratulated Xantheng for coming up with the idea of an industrial park which will incorporate environmental conservation.

Seychelles triathlete makes history in Philippines’ first full Ironman

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT - Pride of the Seychelles Nick Baldwin has just made many different forms of history on Sunday here.

Baldwin bested six other fellow male professional triathletes. to claim the top spot in the 2018 Century Ironman Philippines – the first-ever full-distance Ironman race in the country.

“This is awesome. I’ve heard a lot about the Philippines and it was really special to win the first one here,” he told reporters with a big smile after winning. “I hope they have more and I hope I get to come back again.”

The 30-year-old logged a total time of 8:50.13 in the race covering 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of biking, and 42.95 km of running.

His time was six minutes better than his closest competitor – leaving no doubt about the very first personal championship for him.

More than that, Baldwin’s win also made him the very first Seychelles triathlete to win an Ironman race.

The Seychelles is an Eastern African archipelagic country found in the Indian Ocean. It has a population of 94, 228, as per the UN.

1,278 triathletes join first-ever PHL full Ironman in Subic Freeport

A total of 1,278 triathletes joined the Century Tuna Ironman Philippines 2018 here on Sunday, helping cement Subic’s reputation as the triathlon capital of the country, as the business and tourism enclave hosted the first full marathon event to be held in the Philippines.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman Wilma T. Eisma formally signalled the start for the full marathon that engaged participants in a challenging yet picturesque course in this free port.

“We are very elated over the fact that the first full marathon was held here in the Subic Bay Freeport,” Eisma said. “This is certainly a momentous occasion for us. Subic is now a glorious part of Philippine sports history.”

The Ironman Subic event featured a gruelling 3.8-km swim, 180-km bike, and 42-km run course that challenged even the toughest triathletes from all over the world.

But with hundreds of locals competing in the event, it also showed that the Filipinos are embracing the sport that has been around the Subic Bay Freeport for more than a decade.

“Competing in a full triathlon requires a high level of commitment from the athletes to train for long, hard hours for at least five months. And Century Tuna is proud to be at the forefront of promoting health and fitness in the country,” said Greg Banzon, vice president and general manager of Century Pacific Food, the event sponsor.

“The expected scale and scope of attention the event generated in the country and the global triathlon community gives us a very big stage to shout out our message of living a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise,” he added.

Around 830 local triathletes competed in the event that also drew bets from 47 countries, including 78 each from China and Japan, 54 from the United States, 47 from Singapore and 29 from Australia. Great Britain and Northern Ireland also fielded a combined 18-triathlete delegation while Korean sent in 16.

The race started at Subic’s Triboa Bay with the swim leg of the event at the ACEA Resort before the field tackled the 2-loop bike race at the Subic-Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). It was capped by a punishing 2-loop marathon along the coast of Subic Bay.

The holding of the full distance Ironman in the Philippines was a significant leap for the development of the sport in the region, said Ironman Asia Managing Director Geoff Meyer.

The Philippines joins elite 20,000 TEU club

The Philippines celebrated another step towards the elite of shipbuilding with the delivery of its first 20,000 TEU class boxship.

South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction-Philippines Inc. (HHIC-Phil) recently unveiled the CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery, the first 20,600 TEU container vessel built in Subic Bay Freeport, the largest ship ever built in the Philippines and one of the biggest ships ever built in the world.

The CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery is the first of three 20,600 teu boxships that HHIC-Phil is building for France’s leading liner group.

The ship has an overall length of 400 meters, a width of 59 meters, depth of 33 meters and gross tonnage tipping at 217,673 tons.

With a deck as big as three football fields combined, the CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery is considered one of the biggest ships in the world today, HHIC-Phil officials said during the completion ceremony held at the firm’s Redondo Peninsula shipyard.

The mammoth container vessel, which was named after the French aristocrat and literary icon Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was built over a period of one and a half years, from February 8, 2016, when the first steel cutting was made, to its launching in August 19 last year.

The CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery is the first of three 20,600 TEU container ships that HHIC-Phil has committed to build for the French container transport and shipping firm CMA CGM (Compagnie Maritime d’Affrètement-Compagnie Générale Maritime, translated as Maritime Freighting Co.-General Maritime Co.).

Two other vessels of the same size and type are in advance stages of shipbuilding at Hanjin’s 326-hectare shipyard here.

The vessel completion ceremony here on Thursday was graced by noted government officials, led by former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, under whose administration the Hanjin shipyard was launched.

According to HHIC-Phil President Gwang Suk Chung, the delivery of the Antoine de Saint Exupery “represents a breakthrough in global shipbuilding,” as the Korean company’s cutting-edge technology complemented by the skills of Filipino workers successfully launched vessels of higher tonnage and value.

Chung also recalled that “the intensive support of the Philippine government” gave the Korean a robust head start in the country’s shipbuilding industry.

HHIC-Phil officials said that the firm still has a number of high-value commercial vessels on order with their launchings and deliveries spread across 2018 and 2019. These include liquefied petroleum gas carriers and crude-oil carriers, among others. In January last year, the HHIC-Phil marked another milestone with the delivery of Gener8 Hector, the first “very large crude carrier” ever constructed in the Philippines. The vessel was delivered to the United States-based crude-oil shipping company Gener8 Maritime.

In her speech, Arroyo cited the $2.3-billion investment by HHIC-Phil in the Subic Bay Freeport. She also noted that the Korean firm had also built a massive training facility for local workers.

Meanwhile, SBMA Chairman Wilma T. Eisma thanked HHIC-Phil on behalf of President Duterte, pointing out that the Hanjin shipyard had played a vital role in national economic growth.

“With the 113 ships that Hanjin has delivered since it began operations in 2007, Hanjin’s presence in the Subic Bay Freeport has made the Philippines the fourth-biggest shipbuilding nation in the world,” she said.

Eisma also urged the Korean firm to look after its Filipino workers, who are an integral part of the success of the company. “We ask you to protect our people, to look after our facilities, because Subic is our home,” she added.

Last year HHIC-Phil delivered its first VLCC. It also has LPG vessels on its orderbooks. In terms of area size, HHIC-Phil is among the very largest shipyards in the world. Its parent, Hanjin Heavy in Busan, South Korea, took the decision to expand overseas 12 years ago as its own facilities were too cramped at a time where ship sizes were growing rapidly.

Other notable shipbuilders in the Philippines are Tsuneishi and Keppel cementing the Philippines' position as the world’s fourth largest shipbuilding nation.

Another white lion born in Subic Freeport

Another white lion was born at the Zoobic Safari animal theme park here recently, the third time that such birth was recorded in this free port.

Zoobic Safari owner Robert Yupangco said the white lion was born last April 3 and is now one and a half months old.

The lion cub was named Christian Amando as a tribute to former Zoobic Safari staff Christian Hon, who died before its birth, and Australian ambassador to the Philippines Amanda Gorely, who visited the theme park recently.

Currently, Christian Amando consumes some 72 ounces of kitten milk replacer (KMR) every day to complete the prescribed food for nursing kittens.

Yupangco said that lion cubs need supplemental feeding after being breastfed by their mothers for the first three days. They also need colostrum for strengthening of their immune system.

“If ever, Christian Amando will be the first white lion bottle-feed survivor,” said Noe Pasilan, the park’s zoology supervisor, who helped deliver the cub at Zoobic Safari.

Amando’s parents, Tisay and JB, both came from a white lion family imported from the Middle East.

The white lion is a rare color mutation of the lion. They were thought to have been indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was in 1938.

White lions in the area of Timbavati are of the same subspecies as the tawny Southeast African lion (Panthera leo krugeri) found in some wildlife reserves in South Africa, and in zoological parks around the world.

Until 2009, when the first pride of white lions was reintroduced into the wild, it was widely believed that the white lion could not survive in the natural environment. It is for this reason that a large part of the population of white lions now reside in zoos. (Camille Pelagio/MPD-SBMA)

SBMA bags top slot in Asia CEO 2016 Awards

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) added another feather to its cap as the Executive Leadership Team of the Year in the recently concluded Asia CEO 2016 Awards night.

On hand to receive the top award of the evening was former SBMA chairman and current administrator Roberto Garcia during whose term as chairman the agency’s exceptional performance and financial breakthroughs were achieved.
In his brief acceptance remarks, Garcia said that when he assumed the chairmanship in 2011, “the SBMA’s management team and staff were demoralized for having received only one salary increase for 18 years, and the agency was suffering from tremendous losses”.

“It was a challenge to them to turn around (the agency) and rally to the theme that we had, which was “Good governance makes good business”.

This, Garcia said, spurred the team “to produce historic records for SBMA in terms of revenues, profits, investments, and the number of jobs generated”.

“This award is really a testimonial to them,” Garcia added, referring to the SBMA’s present management team, which has been in place since 2007.

After thanking the Asia CEO for the honor bestowed upon the SBMA, Garcia said, “This is an inspiration and a message to my fellow workers in government that we can excel and we have excelled…that government agencies like the GSIS can deliver world-class service that can compete with the best in the Philippines”.

From among 16 awards given that evening, the GSIS received the Service Excellence Company of the Year award and was the only other government entity aside from SBMA among the roster of winners.

The Asia CEO Awards, which aims to promote the Philippines on the world stage, is the largest business awards event of its kind in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific region, representing the most outstanding grouping of local and international business people and organizations in both the private and public sectors.

The SBMA was chosen from among six (6) finalists by a board of judges, which received the highest number of submissions in the history of Asia CEO Awards.

For the Executive Leadership Team of the Year award, the judges based their choices on five (5) basic criteria, which were leadership and good governance, financial contribution, pioneering achievements, social commitment, and international recognition.

Last year, the Subic Bay Freeport, which is managed by SBMA, was recognized in the Global Free Zones of the Year 2015 Awards as overall winner in Asia, and overall winner in the sub-region of South and Southeast Asia, and commendations in the form of bespoke awards for infrastructure developments and reinvestment.

SBMA chosen as finalist in 2016 Asia CEO Awards

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has made it to the list of finalists in this year’s upcoming Asia CEO Awards, the largest business awards event in Philippines and one of the biggest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region.

According to a list published in the Asia CEO Awards website, the SBMA is one of the six finalists for the Executive Leadership Team of the Year award, and the only government entity vying for the title in this category.

The other finalists are contact center and performance marketer Acquire BPO; top BPO firm Cognizant Technology Solutions Philippines, Inc.; appliance maker Concepcion Industrial Corporation; electronics manufacturer Integrated Micro-Electronics Inc.; and cargo logistics giant LBC Express, Inc.

The Asia CEO Awards, which is presented by PLDT Alpha Enterprise, recognize extraordinary leaders who have demonstrated outstanding achievement for their organizations and contributions to others.

Its purpose is to promote the ASEAN region as a premier business destination and is considered a must-attend occasion for business leaders active in the region.

The annual awards presentation was established as a natural outgrowth of Asia CEO Forum, the largest regular networking event for the business community in Philippines.

SBITC services largest ship to call at the Port of Subic

Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC) recently serviced the largest container vessel to call at the New Container Terminals 1 & 2 at the Port of Subic, the APL Tourmaline.

The Singaporean vessel is part of American President Line’s (APL) Manila Express Service (MNX), which features weekly direct calls to Subic Bay and Manila’s North and South Port. The service starts from Kaohsiung, Taiwan then heads to Subic Bay and Manila in the Philippines, before returning to Kaohsiung.

The service also connects the Philippines to Japan through Kaohsiung via APL’s Japan-Thailand-Vietnam (JTV) and Japan-Thailand 2 (JT2) services.

With a length overall of 294.11 meters and capacity of 4,500 TEUs, APL Tourmaline replaces the 259.80-meter long, 4,330-TEU capacity APL Bahrain as the largest vessel to be serviced by SBITC. APL Bahrain made its maiden call to the Port of Subic in 2010.

The vessel highlights the port’s capability to handle large ships and increased container traffic as more businesses start using Subic for its logistical advantages.

First PH micro-satellite Diwata-1 to be launched into space tonight

Following its historical delivery to the International Space Station (ISS) last month, Diwata-1, the first Philippine micro-satellite, will be driven to space to start its mission on April 27, Wednesday, 7 PM (Philippine time).

Diwata-1 is expected to be in orbit for approximately 20 months and will be imaging the country twice daily.

Along with the micro-satellite development is the installation of the satellite ground receiving station called PEDRO or the Philippine Earth Data Resources Observation. Located in Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales, Pedro is tasked to receive Diwata-1 imagery, including other images from selected commercial satellites.

According to the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), the micro-satellite will be released by the JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer at an altitude of 400 kilometers from the earth’s surface.

The deployment of Diwata-1 marks the first foray of a 50-kg class satellite from the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) nicknamed “Kibo”, the National Research and Development Institute of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in Tsukuba Space Center said.

Acknowledging this historical milestone, JAXA noted that “the deployment of the micro-satellite combines the only air lock and robot arm in the ISS used in Kibo operations, which, in the future, is expected to be one of the important means to meet the launch needs of micro-satellites.”

Diwata-1’s mission is to capture photos and images from its main payload consisting of high precision telescope, spaceborne multispectral imager, and wide field camera. The telescope produces high-resolution imaging for observing large-scale weather patterns while the imager is used for monitoring bodies of water and vegetation. Meanwhile, the camera is used in observing large-scale weather patterns.

According to DOST secretary Mario G. Montejo, Diwata-1 is historic as it is designed, developed, and assembled by Filipino scientists. “Aside from the micro-satellite’s use in disaster-response mechanisms, agriculture, tourism, and others, it also marks a milestone in the country’s developing space program and a testament that local scientists can make our own micro-satellite,” he said.

Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said that the launch of Diwata-1 is “not only a giant leap for Philippine science and technology. It could also provide Philippine policy makers with the scientific data and information needed to formulate policies relating to disaster mitigation, agricultural productivity, and management of land and water resources.

Another space-related facility under construction is the UP Diliman Micro-satellite Research and Instructional facility which will be the hub of training for future space technology research and development activities.

Diwatas 1 and 2, and the ground station called (Pedro) are part of a three-year, P840.82-million microsat program.

White tigers born in Subic theme park

Two tiger cubs are now the stars of the show in an animal theme park here: the first white tigers to be born in captivity at Zoobic Safari, one of the most popular tourist attractions in this premier free port.

According to Veterinary Doctor Cherique Favor-Smith, Titan and Apollo, both males, were born on March 16 at Zoobic Safari’s veterinary clinic and are currently in good health.

The newly-born white tigers are part of a pack that consists of only three other adult white tigers. Currently, there are more than 40 Bengal tigers inside Zoobic Safari, and only five are white.

According to Smith, white tigers are usually born in captivity and the color of their fur is not an abnormality.

Both Titan and Apollo, she added, are products of inbreeding, with parents Icy and Snowy, female and male, respectively. The result was the two cute balls of fur.

The other white tiger in the pack is Mate, who was also donated by a prince from the United Arab Emirates.

The so-called white tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Sunderbans, and especially in the former State of Rewa.

The white Bengal tigers are distinctive due to the color of their fur, which is caused by the lack of the pigment pheomelanin, which gives the orange fur color of the Bengal tigers.

Compared to the ordinary Bengal tigers, the white Bengals tend be somewhat bigger at birth and as fully grown adults, grow faster and heavier.

Animal experts consider white Bengal tigers to be fully grown when they are two to three years of age. White male tigers reach weights of 200 to 230 kilograms and can grow up to three meters long.

As with all tigers, the white Bengal tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints, with no two tigers having the same pattern. The stripes of the tiger are a pigmentation of the skin; if an individual were to be shaved, its distinctive coat pattern would still be visible. (JRR/MPD-SBMA)

PH’s Diwata–1 satellite launched into space

The Philippines yesterday took the penultimate step to launching an observation satellite in space as Diwata-1 soared to the International Space Station (ISS).

At around 11:05 a.m., an American supply spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral, carrying 20 nano satellites, the Filipino-made 50-kg Diwata-1 microsatellite, and other payload.

Officials of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the University of the Philippines, and members of the media waited as the Orbital ATK’s Cygnus spacecraft pierced the Earth’s atmosphere.

Dr. Carlos Primo David, executive director of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), said the flight takes about six hours from the ground station to the ISS.

“This is a momentous event,” he exclaimed after the Cygnus, the last stage of the spacecraft that will reach the ISS, separated from its carrier and slowly disappeared in the darkness of space for a rendezvous with the ISS.

He said the final step in the Philippines’ journey to space pertains to the deployment or release of Diwata-1 from the Japan Experimental Module (JEM), nicknamed Kibo (Hope) on April 20, or later.

Kibo has a lock and robotic arm to be used in Diwata-1’s deployment at an altitude about 400 kms from Earth’s ground surface.

University of the Philippines Associate Professor Gay Jane Perez of the Institute of Environmental Science and Metrology, and project leader of PHL-Microsat Project 5, said that, among others, the microsatellite’s images once it starts beaming back to Earth (ground station in Subic Bay Freeport), can be sources for information for farmers, for weather pattern.

She said Diwata-1 will look at crop areas, status and health of crops of various crops like rice and corn.

“So, it can be used in monitoring areas and it can provide information to farmers and also to government agencies,” said Perez. (Edd K. Usman, Manila Bulletin)
